1. In his interview about materialism Tim Kasser explained materialism’s reliance on both modeling (grooming) and fear. “We find that people who are threatened compared to a control group, materialism becomes more important to them.” I believe that lack of security will be mobilized to justify more fear and more tech, instead of being used to question tech itself. When people are offered some form of surveillance of their accounts after being hacked, they have bought into more surveillance and more data harvesting. Also, outages can be used to justify more tech, redundant tech, etc. (https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/technology/due-to-a-massive-data-leak-at-t-is-reportedly-providing-security-measures-to-its-millions-of-customers/ar-AA1njkXG) I think that many of Tim’s points correlate to tech entrainment and addiction, even devolving past materialism.
2. The OFcom study about children and media provides an overview of how the younger generations are being indoctrinated towards screens and social media – a must read if only the first few pages.
In my article for Earth Day, I noted that the race for Space is competitive and not collaborative. World Without War has provided a short video about the Race for Space and militarization, link below.

MATERIALISM (INSPIRATION) Tim Kasser Talks Materialism - The Technoskeptic Magazine Tim Kasser spent over two decades studying the relationship between materialism and well-being and penned the highly cited book, The High Price of Materialism. [] Professor Kasser and Mo discuss what types of values coincide with healthy relationships to ourselves and the environment. It is impossible to hear this podcast without thinking, “Do I really want to tether myself to a ‘delivery system’ that injects unhealthy values into every area of life?” Kasser also asks a crucial question about what is and is very deliberately not covered by the advertising-fueled media. “we find that people who are threatened compared to a control group, materialism becomes more important to them. [] we found this increase in materialism over time was correlated with increases in the percentage of the GDP that was due to advertising. It was also correlated with threats. So especially threats that children had experienced earlier in their life [] We showed that an 18-year-old in 1988 That cohort's materialism was predicted by how much threat there was in 1970 and in 1975, okay? [] Most of these studies are done in North America where most of the media that is ingested is media which is put out there by for-profit companies that make their profit by selling commercials. That is the media system that we exist under. It's owned by about six companies. I think 95% of the media in the United States, more or less. And it's all for-profit and it's all on a commercial basis. That's the business model. technology is the delivery system which is used in order to either...Deliver advertising messages to people. Right. Make it easier for them to shop. Right. Or spy on them so that you can develop products or advertisements that will help facilitate consumerism even more. 37 MINUTES audio or read transcript.

Ai: Olympic organizers unveil strategy for using artificial intelligence in sports The International Olympic Committee outlined its agenda for taking advantage of AI. Officials said it could be used to help identify promising athletes, personalize training methods and make the games fairer by improving judging. [] The IOC has partnered with Intel to scout out potential athletes in overlooked places. The tech company took its equipment to Senegal, where they visited five villages and analyzed the athletic ability of a thousand children, by measuring how high they could jump and how fast they could react. Using AI to analyze the results, "we found 40 that are really promising," said Christoph Schell, Intel's chief commercial officer. The shortlisted kids' results were then run through an algorithm that recommended what sports they'd be good at, he said. https://techxplore.com/news/2024-04-olympic-unveil-strategy-artificial-intelligence.html

CHILDREN OFCOM: Children's Media Lives 2024 Ten Years of Longitudinal Research Now, most children get their own smartphone when they are nine or 10 and a quarter of three to four-year olds have one. And on these phones, in this study we see children are mostly consuming media alone and via social media. In 2014, children reported to Ofcom they were spending 12 and a half hours a week online [ ] The trend is towards heightened intimacy [ ] The children’s attention is being caught by hyper-stimulating videos that are loud, bright, dramatic and dizzying. If their interest starts to fade, they’re encouraged to wait for the ‘big reveal’, or they choose to watch the video at twice the speed so they can ‘get to’ the next one more quickly. – INCLUDES The difference a decade makes – 10 years of Children’s Media Lives, TikTok: from dance routines to media dominance, Social media: visual, commercial, professional, Seeking out the sensory online, role of role-play, 'Watch to the end’, Truth, trust and the next 10 years, 71 pages but you can just read the first few. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0021/283044/childrens-media-lives-2024-summary-report.pdf

EHS HOUSING: Electrical hypersensitivity and chemical hypersensitivity: A housing association and a mortgage company in Denmark lead the way A Danish housing association is now building 50 residential buildings specifically for people who are chemically hypersensitive, but also electrosensitive, since the two hypersensitivities often go hand in hand. Realdania, the successor to the Danish Realkreditt, supports the project. Boligforeningen Ringgården, which is behind this project, has created an inspiration catalogue for buildings adapted to people with allergies and MCS. Behind the catalogue is a team from Boligforeningen Ringgården, from the French design firm Artelia, the architectural firms Reværk Arkitektur, Loop Architects and Lybech Landskab, and a couple of researchers from the University of Copenhagen. https://einarflydal.com/2024/04/19/el-overfolsomhet-og-kjemisk-overfolsomhet-danmark-viser-vei/

HEALTH/INDUSTRY: New device harnesses sweat power for fitness trackers In a paper published today in the journal Device, Deakin researchers have outlined how they have designed a wearable hydroelectric nanogenerator—powerful enough to power small electronics such as FitBits and smartwatches—that combines conductive nanomaterials and the evaporation of sweat to generate and store electrical power. "Operation-wise a device needs sweat to generate the current, but since the device is attached to a capacitor, the generated current can be stored. This does not require the wearer to sweat continuously. Similar to a solar panel generating electricity, the generated current can be gradually stored in another device." Figures have shown that more than half of Australians track their fitness with a smartphone, smart watch or fitness band. https://phys.org/news/2024-04-device-harnesses-power-trackers.html
HEALTH: A new wave of wearable devices will harvest a mountain of personal data Today, there are portable devices to obtain high-quality data from brain activity, eye trackers, and the skin (to detect temperature and sweat). Consumers can buy small devices to measure the body's responses that were exclusively available only to research institutions a few decades ago. Although wearables are commercially focused on health monitoring, researchers have long envisioned capturing other kinds of data on a user. A computer that could collect useful information related to a person's brain activity, heart and skin function, or their movement patterns would be able to understand a huge amount about the user. But it's AI that could prove a game changer. Smaller wearables combined with AI algorithms to process the data could produce tools that amplify and augment our goals and performance in life. But there are also downsides to all this information gathering. https://techxplore.com/news/2024-04-wearable-devices-harvest-mountain-personal.html
HEALTH: From Mona Nilsson: "A large number of research studies show that the fetus can be damaged by exposure to radiation from wireless technology, which can cause lasting damage and lead to illness for the child. Expectant mothers should be informed about the risks of this." Electromagnetic fields exposure on fetal and childhood abnormalities: Systematic review and meta-analysis "Maternal exposure to electromagnetic fields, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy, due to the high level of stem cells and their high sensitivity to this radiation, the biochemical parameters of the umbilical cord blood examined was shown increased oxidative stress reactions, changes in protein gene expression, DNA damage, and increased embryonic abnormalities. In addition, parental exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation can lead to the enhancement of different cell-based cancers and developmental disorders such as speech problems in childhood." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10183723/ courtesy Sharon
HEALTH Dr. Mark Grossman Dry Eyes, Computer Screens, and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) Screentime Can Lead To Dry Eye The widespread popularity of video games has led to individuals spending an average of at least one hour per day playing them. A study examining the effects of video game playing observed alterations in tear quality, including a decrease in tear meniscus height, reduced tear breakup time, an increase in tear breakup area, and changes in the interference patterns of the lipid layer.4 Schoolchildren and Smartphones Research indicates that school-age children with dry eye disease tend to spend more time using smartphones than those without the condition. For instance, a study conducted in 2020 involving 9- to 10-year-old children revealed that they spent an average of 3.8 hours per day engaged with screens, including activities like watching TV, videos, playing video games, texting, chatting, and using social media. Almost all children reported using screens daily, 9 a trend that further intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when children stayed at home, relying on computers for both educational and personal purposes.10 11 Dry Eye Causes and Effects Dry eye disease (DED) is characterized by instability in the tear film and inflammation, potentially causing damage to the ocular surface. 12 Symptoms of DED vary from person to person and can range from mild discomfort to more severe issues such as blurry vision, eye pain, and fatigue.13 14 Additionally, DED may lead to difficulties in reading and driving, 15 16 17 impact mental health, 18 and reduce work productivity.19 20 Other symptoms include photophobia, stinging, burning, itching, and irritation. 21 Without proper treatment, DED can progress to corneal damage, particularly in chronic cases where tears fail to lubricate the eyes adequately. INDUSTRY (Justification of Wifi): Connectivity Trends for Senior Living in the United States The US population continues to age rapidly, and this aging boom has a multifold impact on the senior housing industry. Contrary to popular belief, seniors have become increasingly technology-savvy and are enthusiastic internet users. While senior residents continue to consume mainly linear/cable television, online streaming is on the rise. Seniors also increasingly use mobile applications for banking, video chatting, gaming and engaging with their local community. As active seniors move around their apartments and common areas, Wi-Fi roaming becomes important to maintain connectivity throughout the property, whether it be independent or assisted living. In short, senior residents’ expectations are rapidly changing. The senior living industry has its share of challenges. It is marked by staff shortages, increased medical costs and low digitalization. Senior housing leaders are continuously asked to do more with less. This state of affairs represents an opportunity for technology and connectivity to play a vital role in improving operational efficiency through automation and better integration of legacy systems and facility IoT. For caregivers and administrative staff, managed Wi-Fi is the foundational layer that enables them to serve the residents and better accomplish their duties. Wi-Fi makes it possible to reduce residents' isolation while facilitating the staff’s work in senior living. Video calls, telemedicine, home automation systems—the list of innovations that improve the well-being of senior residents while optimizing the working conditions of care staff is growing https://www.benton.org/headlines/connectivity-trends-senior-living-united-states INDUSTRY Report: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0313/2473/files/Brochure_Senior_living_connectivity_trends.pdf
INDUSTRY RF: RF Power Transmitter Ushers Over-the-Air Wireless Charging into Homes "Powercast will be at CES 2023 with its Ubiquity RF power transmitter, a device it hopes can make a pervasive presence of RF wireless power in smart homes. With this transmitter, Powercast claims to have lowered the barrier to entry into having multiple RF wireless power transmitters covering every home....The Ubiquity transmitter can output up to 1 W (3 W EIRP) and automatically charges multiple RF-enabled devices that come into its charging zone, with no charging mats needed. Power-hungry devices charge faster within several feet of the transmitter, while ultra-low-power devices like IoT sensors can charge up to 120 feet." https://www.mwrf.com/technologies/embedded/systems/article/21257162/microwaves-rf-ces-2023-rf-power-transmitter-ushers-over-the-air-wireless-charging-into-homes Courtesy Sharon
MILITARY The Pentagon Is Dangerously Edging Toward the Dark Side of AI As DOD integrates artificial intelligence into military operations, concerns rise over ethics, transparency, and unintended consequences. Accidents in the use of AI systems have their own potentially dire consequences, as pointed out by Michael Klare in a report for the Arms Control Association: “many analysts have cautioned against proceeding with such haste until more is known about the inadvertent and hazardous consequences of doing so. Analysts worry, for example, that AI-enabled systems may fail in unpredictable ways, causing unintended human slaughter or uncontrolled escalation.” The Pentagon has given lip service to the potential dangers posed by widespread weaponization of AI, but its calls for responsible use of these systems ring hollow in the face of its public commitments to deploy advanced technology as quickly as possible. https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-pentagon-is-dangerously-edging-toward-the-dark-side-of-ai/ (if link does not work use your search engine)

NATURE: BRITISH TRUST FOR ORNITHOLOGY The wireless tracking of birds "Each system has its pros and cons in terms of weight, power requirements and cost. Ironically, one of the most power-hungry systems is not one that transmits to satellites orbiting the earth hundreds of kilometres away, but the system that uses the terrestrial mobile phone network. With peak currents of around one Amp (other transmission methods may be less than a tenth of that), it needs a high energy density battery, such as a Lithium battery. It is not yet possible for the really small devices (less than 12 g) to use this technology because of the battery issue, but mobile phone transmission is far cheaper per Mb of data compared to other systems so is the system of choice for many studies." https://www.bto.org/understanding-birds/articles/bird-tracking

PRIVACY: A new wave of wearable devices will collect a mountain on information on us – we need to get wise about the privacy Large datasets based on responses from the human body could unlock the design of digital tools that weave seamlessly into our daily lives with capabilities that are highly personalised. This includes the smart bed and the intelligent kitchen that can suggest a tailored diet. The next wave of the internet is being designed around data decentralisation – where users can potentially have greater control over how their data is used. This could prevent the misuse of personal information. For example, the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners Lee, has been working on something called Solid. This open source initiative lets people handle their data in personal web servers and choose which organisations can access it. Instead of making people create an account for each service they want to use, Solid would provide a protocol to build what the project refers to as personal online data stores. This would be a way to let users host their personal data on their own computer or, alternatively, choose a trusted provider to host it based on their reputation and physical location. However, to really cement these initiatives, proactive legislation towards digital sovereignty – a person’s right to control their own digital data – would be required. This would guarantee an internet that truly takes privacy seriously. https://theconversation.com/a-new-wave-of-wearable-devices-will-collect-a-mountain-on-information-on-us-we-need-to-get-wise-about-the-privacy-implications-226537

SPACE: Elon Musk's Starlink satellites could be eroding Earth's magnetic field and slowly poisoning us all, ex-NASA scientist warns, ex-NASA physicist tells DailyMail.com space junk could strip Earth's atmosphere, Starlink space junk could become an 'unplanned geoengineering experiment' An ex-NASA physicist warns cheap satellite 'megaconstellations' like Elon Musk's Starlink could disrupt Earth's magnetosphere exposing all life to deadly cosmic rays. Dr. Sierra Solter-Hunt's new study draws on new estimates that Musk's SpaceX is burning up over 2,755 lbs (1.3 tons) of wireless internet satellite debris into Earth's atmosphere every hour — creating a metal layer of 'conductive particulate' in orbit. 'I was very surprised,' physicist Dr Solter-Hunt told DailyMail.com. 'No one has given much research to the accumulation of metal dust from the space industry.' Her new study draws on estimates that Musk's SpaceX is currently burning up over 2,755 lbs (1.3 tons) of internet satellite debris in Earth's atmosphere every hour, creating a metal layer of 'conductive particulate' in orbit. There are now 5,504 Starlink satellites above Earth “The cause for her concern is that vast this fine-particle metal debris already vastly outweighs the weight of the magnetically charged particles that protect Earth from cosmic radiation. The heaviest known portion of Earth's magnetosphere are the large loops of trapped particles called the Van Allen Belts — two donut-shaped regions of small particles energized by cosmic radiation from the sun. The belts loop from Earth's magnetically charged North and South Poles. The weight of this vital region is impossibly small compared to the metal debris that could cut it off from Earth — the Van Allen Belts only have a total mass of 0.0004 lbs (or about 0.00018 kilograms). https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-13324923/elon-musk-satellite-earth-magnetic-field.html courtesy Tanya

WARFARE: Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space Race to the Moon New video: Conflict coming as race for the moon takes off This new video by the Global Network on the coming moon race outlines the competing interests moving to take control of the moon. But why? In the 'Military Space Forces' study it is stated that whoever controls the Earth-Moon gravity well would have a key advantage to decide which nations, corporations or wealthy individuals get off the planet Earth, and who would control shipping of planetary resources obtained at some point by space mining operations. In the diagram (see below right) the study concludes that having armed space stations at the L4 and L5 quadrants on either side of the moon would give decisive military advantage. The study states, "Armed forces might lie in wait at that location to hijack rival shipments on return [to Earth]." In other words - space piracy. Any moon base would also be powered by nuclear reactors as the industry views space as an unlimited market for their unpopular products. The aerospace industry has long maintained that this space militarization program would be 'the largest industrial project' in human history. With current government debt in the U.S. now at $35 trillion and rising - how can the nation truly afford to undertake such a fool hardy game? Thus as usual Washington is rounding up the allies to help pay for this big undertaking. That means your money. Are you onboard? 9 minute video here
