CHILDREN/YOUTH/DEVICES/PHONES/SOCIALMEDIA: A Time We Never Knew "Phones? No. We had each other." FREYA INDIA Introduction from Jon Haidt: Freya India is one of the most sensitive and perceptive Gen Z writers. She went through the social media maelstrom herself and now chronicles its effects on her generation. She writes widely, especially on her Substack, GIRLS. Zach and I enjoy her writing so much that we invited her to join the core team at AnxiousGeneration.com. We’ve already published one of her essays: Algorithms Hijacked My Generation. I Fear For Gen Alpha. Now that she’s on our team, you can look forward to an essay from her each month as part of our series of “Voices of Gen Z.” Welcome, Freya!
A Time We Never Knew "Phones? No. We had each other. “There is a beautiful and melancholic word I like called anemoia. It means nostalgia for a time or a place one has never known.
These are teens mourning childhoods they wasted on the internet, writing laments such as “I know I’m still young (14F), and I have so many years to make up for that, but I can’t help but hate myself for those years I wasted doing nothing all day but go on my stupid phone.”
I think anemoia is partly why we’re seeing a rise in sales for flip phones in the United States, particularly among young people. I think that’s why Gen Z is moving away from dating apps. And it’s why, when Jonathan Haidt asked me to join his Free the Anxious Generation team, and his chief researcher Zach Rausch asked me to explain why I care about the movement, my first thought was to try and express this feeling—the anxiety of a phone-based world. The loneliness, yes, but also the grief. The loss. The feeling of wanting to be free from the only world we’ve ever known.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can give future generations a real-world childhood. We can prioritize play. We can delay entry to social media platforms until at least 16. We can encourage young people to just hang out with each other, without supervision and without smartphones. We can take elements of childhood from previous eras and re-introduce them in modern life. But we have to remember what has been lost. When we are grieving record stores, mixtapes, old-school romance, and friends goofing around in ‘90s high schools, what are we actually grieving? Delayed gratification. Deeper connection. Play and fun. Risk and thrill. Life with less obsessive self-scrutiny. These are things we can reclaim—if we remember what they are worth and roll back the phone-based world that degraded them.
We have to start somewhere. I suppose what I’m asking for here is some sympathy and a little more grace. It’s easy to mock Gen Z and Gen Alpha for their soaring screen time, to roll your eyes at teenagers wasting their youth in their rooms, ruminating about themselves, and feeling hopeless about the future. But they are trying their best to keep up with a world so agonizingly different from any before it—and it is the only one they have ever known.
So please. Next time you cringe at Gen Z for not coping, for not feeling cut out for this world, remember how painful it is to think that the good times are over. Then imagine how much more painful it would be to realize you never knew them. “
CLIMATE: Indigenous people rush to stop ‘false climate solutions’ ahead of COP29 The next international climate meeting could make carbon markets permanent. Indigenous leaders call for a moratorium before it’s too late. The IEN’s language on “false climate solutions” is intentional. Tamra Gilbertson, the organization’s climate justice program coordinator and researcher, said a false climate solution is anything that looks like a tool for reducing emissions or fighting climate change but allows extractive companies to continue profiting from the fossil fuels driving the crisis. “Carbon markets have been set up by the polluting industries,” Gilbertson said. “The premise of carbon markets as a good mitigation outcome or a good mitigation program for the UNFCCC is in and of itself a flawed concept. And we know that because of who’s put it together.” The carbon market moratorium EIN called for would end carbon dioxide removal projects like carbon capture and storage; forest, soil, and ocean offsets; nature-based solutions; debt-for-nature swaps; biodiversity offsets, and other geoengineering technologies. []the participants produced a report detailing how green economy projects and initiatives can create a new way to colonize Indigenous peoples’ lands and territories.[] “The transition towards a green economy [keeps] starting from the same extractivist-based logic that prioritizes the private sector, which is guided by national economic interests of multinationals, which ignores the fights of Indigenous people, the fight against climate change, and the fight against poverty,” Montalvo said, according to a UN translation of a speech he delivered in Spanish. https://grist.org/global-indigenous-affairs-desk/indigenous-peoples-rush-to-stop-false-climate-solutions-ahead-of-next-international-climate-meeting/ This story is published as part of the Global Indigenous Affairs Desk, an Indigenous-led collaboration between Grist, High Country News, ICT, Mongabay, Native News Online, and APTN.
CLIMATE: At UN conference, Indigenous peoples say little has changed after promises made a decade ago Now, climate change is adding urgency to those pledges. “It is thanks to Indigenous peoples, as guardians as 80 percent of the world’s biodiversity, that the sophisticated traditional knowledge and practices they employ, that we have seen gains in the conservation and sustainable use of our increasingly threatened biodiversity,” Francis said in his remarks to attendees. “We must harness the potential of Indigenous knowledge and innovations to mitigate the effects of climate change.” In the 2014 outcome document, such promises include recognizing Indigenous peoples’ knowledge when creating national climate change response plans and protecting Indigenous rights, which include “free, prior and informed consent” to projects on their land. This would mean giving Indigenous peoples the opportunity to agree to energy developments like pipelines and lithium mining on their land before such projects are underway. “However after 10 years of having established these mechanisms and having this declaration, the states — rather than creating conditions to meet the commitments they have made to the Indigenous peoples of the world — they have forged ahead with economic policies, mining, extraction, despoiling Mother Earth without limits,” Salazar said. “All of that has brought with that terrible consequences.” Right now, Indigenous nations are lumped in with non-governmental organizations in the U.N. system like advocacy groups, and can’t serve on key committees where important conversations happen between U.N. member states. https://grist.org/global-indigenous-affairs-desk/at-un-conference-indigenous-peoples-say-little-has-changed-after-promises-made-a-decade-ago/ This story is published as part of the Global Indigenous Affairs Desk, an Indigenous-led collaboration between Grist, High Country News, ICT, Mongabay, Native News Online, and APTN.

EVs: Electric vehicles are 'direct wealth transfer' from owners of gas-powered vehicles to EV owners, experts say One expert said 'all or nothing' EV push is 'one of the biggest energy policy blunders we've ever made' Energy experts are warning about numerous potential issues for electric vehicles, including affordability, range, weather, infrastructure and economic concerns, even as the government and car companies increasingly push them on Americans. Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA operations officer and host of the podcast "The Wright Report," told Fox News Digital that American society has shifted to EVs largely because some people are "just so hellbent on making sure that this transition happens, even if that means wrecking the economy, in terms of electricity, its reliability, the grid, getting brownouts or blackouts or economic wreckage by people who otherwise can't afford these new vehicles." "That cost is being shouldered by buyers and car companies by raising the price of gas-powered vehicles, [which] is basically just a direct wealth transfer, just paying for EV subsidies and that will grow over time, if we continue to keep this regime in place," Brent Bennett, a policy director for Life:Powered, an initiative of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, told Fox News Digital. California, Wright said, is likely a "really sad test case" for what the rest of the country could face, where he said it currently costs about $250 an hour to service an EV. The state has made a strong push for EVs under Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Californians will by 2035 not be allowed to buy new gas-powered cars and light trucks. Bennett discussed the $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs, which he said "is one small part of the whole equation" when it comes to what the government is doing to subsidize EV production. "We calculated that if you add on the socialized infrastructure costs, and then in particular add on California's zero emission vehicle mandate, which adds cost to all of us because the automakers have to pay to produce more EVs in California, and they spread that cost to the whole country, the federal fuel economy regulations alone are subsidizing each EV by about $20,000. Add all this together, and each EV is getting almost $50,000 in subsidies," he said. https://www.foxbusiness.com/media/electric-vehicles-direct-wealth-transfer-owners-gas-powered-vehicles-ev-owners-experts
EVS; Gaining traction, losing tread Pollution from tire wear now 1,850 times worse than exhaust emissions By some distance, the research Emissions Analytics published in early 2020 claiming that tire particulate wear emissions were 1,000 times worse than exhaust emissions generated the most feedback of any subject we have tackled so far – feedback that was a mixture of surprise and scepticism. Since that study, which was transparently designed to quantify the worst-case tire emissions under legal driving, Emissions Analytics has been testing and analysing tire wear emissions in more detail across a wider range of driving conditions, and has performed a detailed chemical analysis of hundreds of new tires. Furthermore, we have worked with the National Physical Laboratory in the UK objectively to quantify the uncertainties in our measurements of chemical composition. The headline conclusion we draw now is that, comparing real-world tailpipe particulate mass emissions to tire wear emissions, both in ‘normal’ driving, the latter is actually around 1,850 times greater than the former. Yes, in normal driving the ratio is almost double the previous figure for aggressive driving. https://www.emissionsanalytics.com/news/gaining-traction-losing-tread
HACKS:
Biggest Data Breaches And Cyber Hacks of 2023 And 2024 Every time you endlessly scroll down your social media feed, two cyberattacks will happen somewhere in the world, occurring at a rate of one attack every 39 seconds. Experts predict that data breaches will cost the global economy $9.5 trillion in 2024. Given that most of us will use the same email address for multiple online accounts, it’s unsurprising that a single email can be compromised in numerous data breaches. Collectively, these attacks contribute to an alarming total of 16.7 billion compromised accounts.

Billions of user accounts have been breached since 2004 — here's what to do if you think you're one of them A global round-up of the most breached countries in 20 years reveals some troubling findings The US is the most breached country since 2004, with 3 billion accounts leaked. Russia follows with 2.4 and China with 1.1. France was fourth with 521.5 million, then Germany with 486.7 million. The rest were Brazil (354.2), UK (321.9), India (320.5), Italy (266.8) and Canada (213.8). But when it comes to the number of breached accounts per resident, Russia is highest with 16.8 million, followed by the US with 9 million. The rest are South Sudan (8.1), France (8.1), Czechia (6.1), Singapore (5.8), Germany (5.8), Canada (5.5), Australia (5.3), The UK (4.8) and Portugal (4.7). It advises users that if they suspect their data or email has been breached (which they can do via free services like Have I Been Pwned?), they should change their passwords immediately, set up two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible, scan for malware on their device, and look out for suspicious emails and phone calls. They should also contact their bank if they think financial information has been leaked.

INDUSTRY: NTIA Releases Digital Equity Funding The NTIA recently announced $811 million in funding for digital equity that is available for States and Territories. This round of funding is part of the $1.44 billion Digital Equity Capacity Grant program of money that will go to States to administer digital equity grant programs. The total funding for digital equity in the IIJA (Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act) was $2.75 billion. It’s expected that the NTIA will launch the $1.25 billion Digital Equity Competitive Grant Program this summer that will make grants directly available to entities like political subdivisions of states, non-profits, schools, libraries, and others. States have two months to ask for their share of the funding. In this round of funding, $760 million is available to 50 states. The States will use this money to make digital equity grants in each state. These grants are not intended for ISPs, but for non-profits, local governments, and related entities. Expect to hear about grant programs in every state as the summer progresses. These grants are part of the larger effort of the IIJA to tackle all aspects of the digital divide. BEAD grants are intended to address the deployment and availability of broadband. The soon to be defunct ACP plan was intended to address affordability. It’s unfortunate that the NTIA has finally gotten around to spending money for the digital equity effort just as the affordability component is dying. https://potsandpansbyccg.com/2024/04/23/ntia-releases-digital-equity-funding/
INDUSTRY: Verizon: Q1 Earnings, Future Outlook and the 5G Gamble In its strategy to revolutionize the fixed wireless broadband market, Verizon prominently features 5G as a central pillar. By offering high-speed and reliable internet connectivity over its 5G network, Verizon could become a compelling alternative to traditional cable internet providers, potentially capturing a valuable share of consumers and businesses. Additionally, if Verizon succeeds in building a nationwide 5G network with extensive coverage and consistently superior performance, it could achieve a competitive advantage that attracts new customers and potentially justifies premium pricing for its services. Finally, 5G's capabilities hold the key to a vast array of innovative applications. These include industrial automation, immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, revolutionary telemedicine solutions and countless other cutting-edge use cases. Verizon's success in partnering with various sectors to deliver these 5G-powered solutions could unlock immense growth opportunities. However, significant risks must be addressed. The sheer cost of building and maintaining a robust 5G network is immense. This continuous capital expenditure could strain Verizon's near-term profitability and add to its debt burden, impacting future flexibility. Furthermore, there's uncertainty surrounding the pace at which consumers and businesses will fully embrace 5G-enabled devices and services. If mass adoption unfolds slower than anticipated, Verizon's return on investment could be delayed, slowing growth prospects. Lastly, Verizon faces intense competition from AT&T (NYSE: T) and T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS), who are equally engaged in the 5G race. To succeed, Verizon must excel in the technical aspects of 5G deployment and differentiate itself through unique service offerings and strategic partnerships. https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/verizon%3A-q1-earnings-future-outlook-and-the-5g-gamble
PRIVACY: How a new law protects your thoughts from tech companies – and why it matters Welcome to the new data privacy frontier, where unregulated neurotech wearables are tracking, analyzing, and even recording your brain activity. If you open your devices with a fingerprint or face scan, you're probably OK with tech companies having some of your biological data. Now, the rise of neurotech wearables is putting your brainwaves on the table, too. On Wednesday, the governor of Colorado signed a bill expanding the state's existing privacy law to include neural data, or brain activity. The bill added brainwaves under the umbrella of biological data, which it defined as "data generated by the technological processing, measurement, or analysis of an individual's biological, genetic, biochemical, physiological, or neural properties, compositions, or activities or of an individual's body or bodily functions." https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-a-new-law-protects-your-thoughts-from-tech-companies-and-why-it-matters/

SMART METERS CANADA: Victorian petition to allow disabling of remote function of electricity smart meters "Current regulations in Victoria do not allow for the disabling of the remote function of electricity smart meters. The fact remains that Victorians are subjected to among the harshest smart meter policies in Australia. Elsewhere, customers have the right to refuse a meter with wireless communications. In other Australian jurisdictions, even if a smart meter has already been installed, customers are entitled to have their meter’s pulsed microwave transmissions disabled. This needs to change! In view of this appalling state of affairs, SSMA urges Victorian residents to sign an e-petition addressed to the Victorian Legislative Council (Upper House) calling on the government to change regulations in Victoria to allow for the disabling of the remote function of electricity smart meters." https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/get-involved/petitions/allow-disabling-of-remote-function-of-electricity-smart-meters Courtesy Sharon
SMART METERS, EHS, BELGIUM (TRANSLATED, EINAR) AMS in Belgium: Court requires authorities to protect electrosensitivities Courtesy Einar Norway Note: Usually I track down a ruling or press releases but the shared doc is only available in French of Flemish. This account is from Einer who is a reliable source IMO, In Belgium, a court has ordered authorities to protect electric hypersensitivity to smart meters:
Last fall, the Constitutional Court in Brussels ruled that the responsible authorities must urgently take measures to protect electric hypersensitivity, as long as their health problems are established.
Thus, the legal system in Belgium has in practice recognised that the public administration must provide adequate protection for those who demonstrate in a reasonable way that their electrical hypersensitivity is a real health challenge. In other words, about what is applicable law also in Norway – but completely opposite to what is recommended by the Norwegian health service and by the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority.
In its fall 2023 ruling, the Constitutional Court ordered authorities to urgently adopt a "special regime without delay" to ensure the health of electric hypersensitivities is protected. This must be understood, Stop5G.be writes, as a de facto moratorium, i.e. a halt until further notice, on the deployment of meters with transmitters, as long as this "special regime" to protect electric hypersensitivity is not defined and adopted.
But so far, the authorities in Belgium have not adopted anything. Stop5G.be therefore urge people to demand a postponement of the replacement until the authorities have come forward with their decisions on how to protect the electrosensitivity.
Here I add: It is easy to understand that it is difficult to form such a regime. Tot some become acutely ill from such is now well documented. After all, it's the same history that repeats itself around the globe. (See e.g. blog entry 1/19/2023.) But in their eagerness to streamline and privatize the electricity market, the EU and energy authorities have chosen to rely on technical limits that electric hypersensitivity is nonsense. These three factors are not so easy to reconcile in a common administrative decision. The authorities almost have to choose sides, but after the administrative court's judgment in Belgium, the current law now as in Norway after the Court of Appeal ruling in Borgarting in the autumn of 2022 is that the technical solution must protect electric hypersensitive.
And, I add, the Belgian judgment can also be understood as a de facto recognition of electrical hypersensitivity, i.e. that electromagnetic fields of the type that come from, among other things, AMS meters, can be a significant health problem for some people. Once such recognition is clear enough, there is a whole small legion of different laws that can be used to ensure that such health effects are taken into account and that society must find mitigation measures or restrict their use. Of course, that's why it's so hard to accept that electric hypersensitivity is caused by electricity, and not just anxiety. [] The referents in Prague, who were people with a strong connection to the wireless industry, recommended that no protective measures should be put in place – because it could make people imagine that there was actually any connection between exposure to electromagnetic fields and their health problems. https://einarflydal.com/2024/04/23/ams-i-belgia-retten-krever-at-myndighetene-beskytter-el-overfolsomme/ translates to English at blog If you read French or Flemish, Belgian press release and links to the verdicts here: https://www.stop5g.be/fr/lettre/CP/20240403.htm PS. So what about dirty electricity? In principle, this is the same thing, but is only slightly behind in knowledge development. In France, where smart meters use the power grid, the rulings require the grid operator to turn off data communication through the power grid for electrical hypersensitivity. The French judgments thus deal with dirty electricity (see, for example, blog entry 23.10.2023). In Norway, several are waiting for a decision by the RME – the regulatory body for the energy market – on whether to grant an exemption from dirty electricity as well, as the Court of Appeal's judgment implies, while the grid companies threaten to shut off power during the waiting period. –Einer
SMART METERS EINAR NORWAY: AMS and "dirty electricity": – Change to a new meter or we cut the power Now the grid companies are taking action again and will take power from those who have complained to RME – the energy market control body. They have complained that the grid company will not bow to current law and give them an exemption also for "dirty electricity" that the new meters make, and which these very few complainants have experience that they cannot withstand.
The grid companies do not want to wait for RME to make a decision on these very few complaints, because it quickly takes a few months. They apparently expect the RME to go against current law, effectively forcing people on meters that can make them sick and that have to work around the clock. https://einarflydal.com/2024/04/24/ams-og-skitten-strom-skift-til-ny-maler-eller-vi-kutter-strommen/
