Editor Notes: IMO the train has left the station regarding the harm posed to children regarding social media, tech addiction, cyberbullying, etc. (and I believe we can help push it, even without the RF issue yet receiving necessary scrutiny). I don’t believe that the industry can put the genie back in the bottle.
I personally view the movement to dumb phones as similar to light cigarettes, as the RF/EMF issues have yet to see the light of day for most, but I am sharing articles to reflect the cultural conversations taking place.
Worth a look/Trigger Warning – ‘researchers’ attempting to defend the telecom industry against conspiracies. This is worth a read as it is more about the industry narrative about conspiracies against telecom than covid/5G. (under 5G)
Worth a look/Trigger Warning The hyperlink to the press release re: Senator Cruz opposing Wi-Fi on school buses has a politicized charge, and I expect that there will be more of this as the elections approach. The article itself is not as compromised. I view the confrontation of the FCC by either/any party/ as positive and hope it attracts wide support. BROADBAND: Study finds affordability, not infrastructure, is major barrier to high-speed internet connectivity [] a new University of Massachusetts Amherst study reveals that direct-to-consumer subsidies can be far more effective at connecting households to high-speed internet than expanding broadband infrastructure. The research, believed to be the most comprehensive accounting of U.S. broadband demand and usage to date, suggests that government policies aiming to expand internet access should be refocused on subsidies rather than infrastructure upgrades to help close the "digital divide" between connected and unconnected households, particularly among households with lower incomes. https://phys.org/news/2024-04-infrastructure-major-barrier-high-internet.html More information: Augusto Espín et al, Bridging the digital divide in the US, International Journal of Industrial Organization (2024). CELLPHONES: Roundup: Should we ditch smartphones? For the past few days, I’ve been thinking a lot about a piece by Joanna Nelius in The Verge. For the past year, she’s been using the Light Phone 2, one of those barebones smartphones that has no app store and very limited functionality. Sure, it took some getting used to, but she described a motivation I think a lot of people can relate to. “If I felt anxious or bored, reaching for my smartphone was an automatic reaction, to the point where I sometimes didn’t realize my phone was in my hand until I was 10 cat videos deep on Instagram. I’m the kind of person who likes to retain control over my faculties, so that terrified me. By making the Light Phone my primary phone, I hoped to separate myself from easy access to social media and change my relationship with how and when I accessed the internet.” https://disconnect.blog/roundup-should-we-ditch-smartphones/
Links to: One year with the Light Phone 2 This ‘dumb phone’ didn’t (completely) replace my smartphone, but it did change my life. [] the “dumb phone” boom is real, and people are looking for ways to peel their eyes from their smartphones like a layer of Elmer’s glue from their hand — to remove a part of themselves that really isn’t a part of themselves.[] The Light Phone took some getting used to. The GPS has improved tremendously in the last year. (I’m no longer afraid of getting lost and puking in my car.) Texting is still frustrating because of the slow E Ink screen, so now I call my friends more often — on the Light Phone or on video from my computer if they’re abroad. It was also awkward at first explaining to family and friends why I couldn’t immediately check my Instagram when they sent me a funny meme or why I couldn’t see a picture they texted. The Light Phone doesn’t support MMS or hyperlinks in texts. Instead, it forwards those messages to my email. https://www.theverge.com/24140675/light-phone-2-one-year-retrospect
Links to: The Dumbphone Boom Is Real A burgeoning cottage industry caters to beleaguered smartphone users desperate to escape their screens. (New Yorker) The growing dumbphone fervor may be motivated, in part, by the discourse around child safety online. Parents are increasingly confronted with evidence that sites like Instagram and TikTok intentionally try to hook their children. Using those sites can increase teens’ anxiety and lower their self-esteem, according to some studies, and smartphones make it so that kids are logged on constantly. Why should this situation be any healthier for adults? After almost two decades with iPhones, the public seems to be experiencing a collective ennui with digital life. So many hours of each day are lived through our portable, glowing screens, but the Internet isn’t even fun anymore. We lack the self-control to wean ourselves off, so we crave devices that actively prevent us from getting sucked into them. That means opting out of the prevailing technology and into what Cal Newport, a contributing writer for The New Yorker, has called a more considered “digital minimalism.” https://www.newyorker.com/culture/infinite-scroll/the-dumbphone-boom-is-real

CHILDREN: Social Media Poses Numerous Risks to Young Minds, Change ‘Needed Soon’, New Study Warns The new report from the APA warns that kids are particularly vulnerable to harm from social media. But age requirements aren’t enough, says one expert. A new study reveals that social media platforms pose several risks for young children and offers a warning that “change is needed soon.” The latest report from the American Psychological Association (APA) warns that social media platforms developed for adults are not inherently appropriate for children. Young minds require a higher level of protection due to their mental and emotional vulnerabilities, the April report warns. This is particularly important for children who are already suffering from mental health issues or other developmental challenges. “Chronological age,” the study warns, “is not directly associated with social media readiness.” ‘It’s an Epidemic’ Jake Denton, a research associate in the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation, says the idea that children somehow become ready for exposure to social media at a particular age is “ludicrous.” “The average adult can’t resist the algorithmic targeting and features like infinite scroll and chasing likes and followers,” he told The Epoch Times. “It sucks in even the strongest of adults. The idea that a child will be ready for this has always been crazy.” “These platforms are attacking the developing brains of these children and while the signs appear different for each child it’s the same problem,” he said. “No child should be on their phone for hours on end with micro-targeted content being pushed to them based on a psychological profile.” Julie Quist is the board chair of the Child Protection League. In an interview with The Epoch Times, Ms. Quist said it’s clear there has yet to be an effective way of addressing the dangers posed to young children on social media. https://www.theepochtimes.com/tech/social-media-poses-numerous-risks-to-young-minds-change-needed-soon-new-study-warns-5638536

“CLEAN ENERGY” A gigantic green energy transmission project will cut through Indigenous lands in the Southwest After a federal court rejected their lawsuit, tribes are turning to the U.N. for help. According to Pattern Energy, the Canadian-owned parent company of SunZia, the wind-transmission project is the largest clean energy infrastructure initiative in U.S. history and will provide power to 3 million Americans stretching from New Mexico to California. Now on track to be finished in 2026, the transmission pipeline is a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s transition to green energy. The 550-mile high-voltage line has a 50-milelong section that cuts through the San Pedro Valley and Indigenous nations that include the Tohono O’odham, Hopi, Zuni, and San Carlos Apache. The suit against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management was filed in January. The lawsuit called the valley “one of the most intact, prehistoric, and historical … landscapes in southern Arizona,” and asked the court to issue restraining orders or permanent injunctions to halt construction. https://grist.org/global-indigenous-affairs-desk/a-gigantic-wind-project-will-cut-through-indigenous-lands-in-the-southwest/

5G INDUSTRY; Looking back to look forward: 5G/COVID-19 conspiracies and the long history of infrastructural fears. To summarize, conspiracy theories:
typically blame powerful forces for unfortunate events;
tend to feature complicated explanations for events more easily explained by coincidence or randomness;
are not necessarily wrong. Most are (like the outlandish 5G/COVID-19 conspiracy), but some conspiracies do have elements of truth;
have a very long history and, while they may be exacerbated by digital communication, have likely always been a prominent part of human thinking; and
are rarely isolated. Conspiracies lay the ground for other conspiracies, and studies have shown that people who strongly believe in one conspiracy typically believe in multiple conspiracies.
Based on these points, we argue against treating the 5G/COVID-19 conspiracy as just a fringe narrative that operates in isolation. Instead, to fully understand the roots of 5G conspiracies and why similar infrastructural conspiracies will likely sprout again, it is important to examine the history of conspiracies about wireless infrastructure and disease.
Because 1G never became widely commercially available, conspiracy theories about dangers of cellular infrastructure mostly began with the second generation of mobile telephony, which largely supported voice calling []The media also played a role in constructing the fear narratives around 2G wireless infrastructure. []To be clear, studies showing negative health effects from EMF exposure are a small minority, but they do exist and have fueled infrastructural conspiracies by providing “official” sources when protesting against new towers.[] Mobile communication practices cannot be separated from the networks that enable and support them. Consequently, conspiracy theories about mobile infrastructure are an important part of scholarship on the social implications of mobile media. This article has provided a genealogical account to help explain the present situation and to help anticipate future situations. We are not arguing that 50-year-old protests against AT&T's microwave towers directly caused 5G/COVID-19 conspiracies. Rather, we assemble specific moments of juncture to show that 5G/COVID-19 conspiracies are part of a much larger pattern. By way of conclusion, we return to the literature to theorize about what it is about mobile infrastructures that make them such fertile ground for conspiratorial thinking. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9623406/ (Courtesy Sean)

HOUSING: Why It’s Still Worth It to Wire Your House for Ethernet Yes, everything is wireless these days. But if your walls are open for another project, running some ethernet wire is still a good idea. (secure, reliable, faster) Is Wiring Your House for Ethernet Worth It? | Lifehacker
HOUSING, INDUSTRY: Homes need to be built for better internet A lot of homes are being built, but a lack of understanding of internet infrastructure and a need to cut costs means they kind of suck for internet. It turns out that the “smart homes of the future” cannot run on Wi-Fi alone thanks to the materials we’ve been using to construct our homes cheaply and quickly for decades. Over the last several years, more engineering and architecture firms have started including ethernet wiring in their building plans, but that’s as far as the digital infrastructure of a home usually goes. What’s forgotten is not only where the pre-built internet hub is placed inside the building but also what materials are used for construction. As for older buildings, a recent study published by several members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, mentions that wireless signals running on mmWave (millimeter wave) or high-frequency bands like Verizon’s 5G home internet have worse “penetration loss” when the signal is being received from outside. Depending on which wave band is being used and what materials are on the outside of the building, that penetration loss can be severe to the point where the Wi-Fi signal can only penetrate a single room.[] If we don’t want our homes to eat Wi-Fi signals, companies will need to start eating the cost of choosing better Wi-Fi-penetrating materials — or, at the very least, they will need to stop putting fiber connection points literally inside wall. SMART METERS: Opting Out of a Smart Meter Is About Freedom and Health. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Gets That. Trying to prevent not just digital electricity meters in our homes, but installation of cell towers as well as small cell installations in our neighborhoods is no easy quest. In my small town, if you want to talk to the zoning board about not installing a giant cell tower in the middle of a residential area, you can argue about the aesthetics; how ugly it will be no matter how hard they try to make it look like a giant tree; your decreased property value; the noise from the power stations; pollution of air and water from construction, etc. But if you want to talk about the real dangers, the health concerns, you will be shut down. There are no processes in place for talking about that. In fact, it is legally irrelevant, I have been told, to argue against the cell tower installation on the basis of its risks to human and animal life.

We need to look into OFF GRID NETWORK, no 5G on that? less EMF?
I like this post, it's just what we need to happen... Dumb phones, lol.
I have not read this entire post, but I will... There is another issue that is lurking behind these cell phones, besides the obvious health concerns for kids, and that is the need to have such an intense amount of EMF's in our environment, now even in space, blanketing the planet and all of us with radiation that is FAR FAR more intense than ever before, and quite pervasive, and tooooo much of it.
THAT is something that is beginning to be a more broadly-discussed threat in our times...
I'm a bit less enthusiastic about RFK, Jr., tho-- I used to like him but he seems to be unwilling to examine the science of "virology"-- or should I say, the lack thereof, which has copious evidence against it now... If you are interested in a very science-oriented and integrity-driven page, try Christine Massey, who has sent out HUNDREDS of FOIA requests over a couple of years at least, and so far NO ONE can show that the existence of a "virus" as we have been trained to think of it, actually exists. She's not a phony (pun intended!), either, and has my respect... https://substack.com/@christinemasseyfois1
Anyway, this is my first visit to your page, and I very much appreciate this post, well done! I WILL get back to it and finish it! ^_^
