AI: Sounding the Alarm on AI: A Conversation Across the Political Divide | Civil Discourse 34-minute video and transcript In the first episode, Epoch Times senior editor Jan Jekielek and NTD host Steve Lance sit down with Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) to discuss the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). There seems to be a near consensus view that AI needs to be regulated in some way, and there are very different viewpoints on how that might happen. You have introduced legislation to deal with that. One bill has to do with not having autonomous AI-launched nuclear missiles. The other bill is the National AI Commission Act. [] If your laptop malfunctions, it’s not going 50 miles per hour. But there’s a lot of AI in moving objects; planes, trains, automobiles. We just need more regulators who are more attuned to the unique aspects of AI, so they can figure out how to prevent the most significant harm. I’m agnostic as to how we get that to happen. That’s one reason we have this National AI Commission to give us recommendations. There is often legislation passed by Congress that becomes outdated, but still has the force of law and isn’t updated. AI ENERGY: Analysis: The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates Big tech is playing its part in reaching net zero targets, but its vast new datacentres are run at huge cost to the environment Mariana Mazzucato is professor of economics at UCL, and director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose Google’s global datacentre and Meta’s ambitious plans for a new AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) further underscore the industry’s energy-intensive nature, raising concerns that these facilities could significantly increase energy consumption. Additionally, as these companies aim to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, they may opt to base their datacentres in regions with cheaper electricity, such as the southern US, potentially exacerbating water consumption issues in drier parts of the world. Before making big announcements, tech companies should be transparent about the resource use required for their expansion plans. Furthermore, while minerals such as lithium and cobalt are most commonly associated with batteries in the motor sector, they are also crucial for the batteries used in datacentres. The extraction process often involves significant water usage and can lead to pollution, undermining water security. The extraction of these minerals are also often linked to human rights violations and poor labour standards. Trying to achieve one climate goal of limiting our dependence on fossil fuels can compromise another goal, of ensuring everyone has a safe and accessible water supply. Moreover, when significant energy resources are allocated to tech-related endeavours, it can lead to energy shortages for essential needs such as residential power supply. [] Ultimately, despite the unprecedented wave of innovation since the 1990s, we have consistently overlooked the repercussions of these advances on the climate crisis. As climate scientists anticipate that global heating will exceed the 1.5C target, it’s time we approach today’s grand challenges systemically, so that the solution to one problem does not exacerbate another. AUTOMOBILES: It’s time to rethink what counts as a “safe car” OT re RF- GOOD QUOTES RE CELLPHONES Pedestrian deaths have increased 75 percent in the US since 2010, according to Smart Growth America’s latest report. The numbers started increasing dramatically in 2020, with pedestrian deaths reaching a 40-year high in 2022. They include dangerous road design that makes it easy for drivers to speed, and a breakdown in traffic enforcement that allows some of the worst drivers to get away with it for so long that they eventually kill someone. I’ve also reported how drivers in the US spend more time using their phones while driving than people in other countries, and on survey data that seems to suggest that drivers in the United States have more lax attitudes toward road safety than their European counterparts. But there’s one thing I still can’t understand. Why has the government failed to address the fact that large, heavy vehicles are deadlier to pedestrians and cyclists than smaller cars? AUTOMOBILES AVS: Waymo issues software and mapping recall after robotaxi crashes into a telephone pole This is Waymo’s second recall ever, after two minor collisions prompted a recall of 444 vehicles last February. And it comes at a time of increased regulatory scrutiny of the driverless vehicle industry, in which federal investigators are probing almost all the major companies operating autonomous vehicles in the US. The incident that prompted the latest recall took place on May 21st in Phoenix. According to local reports, an unoccupied Waymo vehicle was driving to a passenger pickup location through an alley that was lined on both sides by wooden telephone poles. The poles were not up on a curb but level with the road and surrounded with longitudinal yellow striping to define the viable path for vehicles. As it was pulling over, the Waymo vehicle struck one of the poles at a speed of 8mph, sustaining some damage, the company said. here

CHILDREN CELLPHONES: THE SCREENAGERS PODCAST JONATHAN HAIDT EXPLAINS THE YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS Are social media, smartphones, and the sheer amount of time that young people are on screens really the main reason for the rise in mental health problems of today’s youth? On today’s episode, we delve into this pressing issue with Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist, and author of the current New York Times bestselling book, "The Anxious Generation". His insights provide a clear and compelling explanation of why this indeed is likely the case. Beyond just correlational studies, what do actual experiments show us about the link between teen mental health and screen time? Why is the time of puberty particularly concerning when it comes to handing over smartphones and social media? Why does social media seem to impact girls more negatively than boys? These are just some of the questions that today’s episode addresses. In addition, Haidt offers two solutions for improving teen mental health. This episode is not just for adults but also for teens who are directly affected by these issues. Of note, suicidal ideation is mentioned briefly in the episode. 5G POLITICS US: Biden's new spectrum deal may irritate 5G operators There's a new spectrum agreement among various factions within the Biden administration. But the wireless industry might not be too happy about it. According to a variety of reports, a contentious battle over spectrum between the US Commerce Department and the US Department of Defense (DoD) may have finally come to an end. But the US wireless industry might not be pleased at the outcome. [] According to one Washington insider, the new agreement likely paves the way for spectrum sharing in bands including the lower 3GHz. That would please the US cable industry but represent a blow to lobbying efforts by the US wireless industry, led by its trade association CTIA. [] "We are concerned that the Spectrum and National Security Act of 2024 focuses too much on the complex topic of dynamic spectrum sharing and omits a pipeline of much-needed mid-band spectrum to meet growing consumer demand, close America's widening 5G spectrum deficit, and counter China's drive to dominate the world's innovation industries," CTIA CEO Meredith Attwell Baker said in a statement in April. HEALTH EMF: WORLD COUNCIL FOR HEALTH Who Tells Us What Amount of EMF Exposure Is Safe and Can We Trust Them? Christof Plothe DO Every species on this planet, from the tiniest insects to the mightiest elephants, suffers under the weight of powerful electromagnetic waves. Written by World Council for Health steering committee member and Health & Science Lead Christof Plothe DO. So, what does ICNIRP advise as a safe level exposure? An astonishing figure of up to 4,500,000 μW/m2. Clearly, authorities should start to demand an independent reevaluation. Especially since the Cosmic Background-Evolutionary Radiation is below 0.0000001 μW/m2, we might ask who makes the recommendations, and compare the rationale between the different opinions. [] The ICNIRP: A private organization with close ties to the WHO and UN [] Founded in 1992 in Germany, the ICNIRP is a private, non-governmental organization (NGO) closely connected to the EMF project of the World Health Organization and the United Nations (UN). While it is not an official organization of the WHO or UN, the ICNIRP's recommendations are declared as the basis for the safety limit regulation. [] Several questions arise regarding the ICNIRP's role and legitimacy: The ICNIRP has consistently rejected existing knowledge and research findings related to the non-thermal effects of electromagnetic radiation. Representatives from the ICNIRP, including those from the industry, vigorously defend the purely thermal view of radiation and deny the existence of biological non-thermal effects. This stance has led to the excluding of any mention of non-thermal effects within the ICNIRP and the dismissal of thousands of studies that provide evidence of such effects. This irresponsible attitude has resulted in numerous health consequences worldwide. Who Tells Us What Amount of EMF Exposure Is Safe and Can We Trust Them? (substack.com)

HEALTH: OT Recent decline in sperm motility among donor candidates at a sperm bank in Denmark Our study focuses on the single semen samples provided by 6758 donor candidates aged between 18 and 45 years old to determine whether their sperm quality met a minimum criterion for them to be accepted as sperm donors. From 2017 to 2019, semen volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm count in the ejaculates of donor candidates increased by 2–12%. Then, from 2019 to 2022, sperm concentration and total sperm count changed by 0.1–5% from year to year, but none of those changes were statistically significant. In contrast, both motile sperm concentration and TMSC declined significantly, by 16% and 22%, respectively, between 2019 and 2022. Thus, the concentration of motile sperm in donor candidates declined from 18.4 [95% CL: 17.0, 20.0] million/ml in 2019 to 15.5 [14.4, 16.7] million/ml in 2022, and TMSC declined from 61.4 [55.8, 67.5] million per ejaculate in 2019 to 48.1 [44.1, 52.4] million in 2022. We cannot determine from the available data the causes of the decline in semen quality of donor candidates from 2019 to 2022. However, as this period coincides with lockdowns and changes in work patterns during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, it is possible that changes in motile sperm concentration and TMSC were the result of changes in the lifestyles of the men whose semen was analyzed. TOWERS ANTENNAS: Crown Castle cuts jobs, small cell expansion plans Crown Castle initially hoped to build 16,000 new small cell nodes in 2024, doubling the 8,000 it built in 2023. But the company is now reducing that 2024 construction target by 3,000-5,000. As part of its ongoing strategic review, Crown Castle said it will cut between 3,000 and 5,000 small cell nodes out of its 2024 construction plans. The company also announced it will cut 10% of its workforce. Crown Castle's move casts yet another shadow over the small cell industry in general. For years, companies in the US wireless industry have suggested that network operators would eventually invest heavily into densifying their networks with more small cells, as a way to improve their overall network capacity. But that big push hasn't materialized. [] In 2018, in the early days of 5G, trade group CTIA cited estimates predicting that the US small cell market would grow to 800,000 cells by 2026. However, new figures from the WIA trade association counted just 202,100 outdoor small cells in operation in the US at the end of 2023. Crown Castle operates the lion's share of those small cells. Nonetheless, CTIA continues to push regulators to cut red tape around small cell deployments. "Deploying additional wireless infrastructure, including small cells, can help to increase capacity for wireless networks," CTIA wrote in a new filing to the FCC.Crown Castle cuts jobs, small cell expansion plans (lightreading.com) Crown Castle cuts jobs, small cell expansion plans (lightreading.com)
TOWERS AND ANTENNAS, INDUSTRY: Two Important Facts About Removing A Cell Tower From Your Property You May Be Paying For That Cell tower lease agreements are generally written as long term contracts, meant to last as long as 40 years or more with very limited reasons for termination. There’s a reason that telecommunication companies structure agreements like this: it’s very expensive to move or relocate a tower. How expensive? It can cost from $50,000-$75,000 to remove the tower, the foundation, the underground cabling and any remaining equipment that needs to be removed. Obviously, the telecommunications company is in no hurry to remove towers “unnecessarily” which means that the property owner would be responsible for this cost if he/she is the one requesting it. Aside from these costs, the lease agreement may also include language around recovering lost income the telecommunication company may experience during the transition. Two Important Facts About Removing A Cell Tower From Your Property - Vertical Consultants: Cell Tower Lease Experts
TOWERS AND ANTENNAS: Florida Parents Reject ‘Absurd’ Active Shooter Narrative, Succeed in Keeping Cell Tower Off School Property Telecom companies often tell school boards they need to install cell towers to protect kids and staff during active shooter scenarios. Many parents and attorneys say that claim is false and that the towers pose a health risk to students. The claim that the school’s students would be unsafe during an emergency without the proposed cell tower turned out to be false — but the wireless industry commonly propagates such claims, an investigation by The Defender has found. Attorney Robert Berg, who represents parents in multiple lawsuits challenging proposals for cell towers or wireless antennas at their kids’ schools, told The Defender that cell tower companies make “false claims intended to convince the school boards of a need to have cell towers on school property.” “Typically the argument they use,” he said, “with every school district that I’ve encountered is like, ‘God forbid that there’s a school shooting’ … that’s one of their false claims they use to try to scare districts into accepting towers on their property.” That’s exactly what happened in Florida last year at Starkey Ranch K-8, Berg said. https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/florida-parents-reject-cell-tower-school/

Americans for Responsible Technology FIRES: Urgent Notice to Municipalities Concerning Fire and Electrical Requirements for Telecommunications Antennas and Associated Equipment Severe weather events are increasing across the country, putting additional stress on utility poles that support communications equipment, and increasing the possibility of pole failure. Pole failure is a major concern because of its potential to cause fire and property damage.
In addition, electrical engineers have recently discovered instances of sub-standard wiring in certain wireless antennas -- another serious fire risk. Therefore, we are urging municipalities to immediately upgrade their municipal codes and enforcement to include specific language on structural integrity as well as updated electrical and fire specifications. The implications of non-action to protect life and property are significant. Electrical fires are not like other fires; firefighters must wait for power to be shut off before the fire can be extinguished, creating the potential for fire to spread to surrounding areas and buildings. Adding to this concern, areas of dense vegetation near telecom antennas may be more vulnerable to fires, as a new study by Dr. Martin Pall describes how constant exposure to electromagnetic fields can alter plant physiology and increase flammability. You can help protect your community by downloading the Urgent Memo from the ART website and sharing it with your local officials. Urgent Notice V2 (americansforresponsibletech.org)
OVER 70 BILLS IN CONGRESS! Easy instructions to help stop dangerous telecom bills. Courtesy 5G Free California and The National Call,
Telecom has Congress racing to pass over 70 dangerous wireless bills without any safety studies! This includes bills that will harm farmers and their crops & animals due to high radiation levels. There are also bills that will populate wireless antennas in all our National Parks and on Federal lands, increasing the probability of wildfires when these cell sites are known for electrical fires. Other bills put our national security at risk. In addition, this technology is an energy hog. It's important that we expand our efforts in reaching our elected officials in Congress and the Senate.
These bills are already passing through Committees and the House, so we need to act quickly. Many of our U.S. Representatives and Senators are in favor of these bills. We need to change that asap.
We are hoping you can do two things:
#1 Send a written comment to Your Senators
#2 Ask for a Zoom meeting with your Representative in Congress (see simple instructions below).
Sample Comment for contacting the Senators on their webpage, social media or direct email address:
Dear Senator _________,
Telecom has Congress racing to pass over 70 bills to fast track wireless without any safety studies! These bills have dangerous aspects you may not be aware of. This includes bills that will harm farmers and their crops & animals due to high radiation levels. There are also bills that will populate wireless antennas in all our National Parks and on Federal Lands increasing the risk of wildfires, since these wireless sites are known for electrical fires. Other bills put our national security at risk.
In addition, wireless facilities are huge energy hogs! With all the discussion of power availability and the negative impacts of many power sources on the health of our planet, it is hard to comprehend that this technology should be encouraged to expand at such an astounding rate.
Instead, this billion dollar industry should work on their own safe, renewable power sources to run their technology before they do a massive build out.
I hope you will consider the additional, well-studied information found on this website: https://ehtrust.org/congress/
when deciding how to vote on, amend or change these bills.
Sincerely,
Your name and zip codeFor your U.S. Representative: Ask for a Zoom meeting with your U.S. Representative.

b. Charles Frohman (National Health Federation lobbyist) and Odette will lead a curated presentation for the U.S. Senator / Rep. on the telecom bills relevant to them.
c. You won't need to talk about the bills yourself, but be prepared to talk about local issues, i.e. city council meetings, and/or any concerns/personal experiences. Invite others to join.
Also: You can email to inform your Federal Representative by adapting the Senator Comment above and providing the EHTrust information link.
