"When cell phones are on, connected to a wireless network, and placed in a pocket, the radiation is two to seven times higher than if it were placed in a purse or holster," she says. CHILDREN: MENTAL HEALTH Why The Gallup World Poll Is Unreliable Relying on the GWP can explain why some researchers fail to find effects of digital technology on youth mental health. Relying on the GWP can explain why some researchers fail to find effects of digital technology on youth mental health,For some time, Jon, Jean Twenge, and I have been engaging in a productive academic debate with a few researchers about the scale of the youth mental health crisis. We argue that the mental health of adolescents—measured by levels of anxiety, depression, and other indicators—began to decline in the early 2010s across the Anglosphere, the Nordic nations, and numerous Western European countries. Is the decline global, or is it limited to a subset of developed Western nations? In a previous post here at After Babel, Dartmouth economist Danny Blanchflower independently found that young people (ages 18-25) now report worse mental health than all other age groups in 82 countries around the world. [] But we are starting to accumulate more data, and we are seeing that young people are reporting worse mental health than all other age groups in nations all over the world. In this post, Dartmouth College economist Danny Blanchflower examines the Gallup World Poll in-depth and identifies four major problems that he believes explain why the GWP finds such different results from other international datasets. CHILDREN: Big News: The Surgeon General Calls for a Warning Label on Social Media Dr. Murthy is right. The evidence of widespread harm to adolescents is now strong. The U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, has long been a leader on the youth mental health crisis. He wrote a book in 2020 on loneliness (Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World), and in 2023 he issued a landmark report on loneliness. In 2023, he also published a major report, a Surgeon General’s Advisory reviewing the research on social media HERE AND Opinion | Surgeon General: Social Media Platforms Need a Health Warning - The New York Times (nytimes.com) HERE AND Social media and youth mental health defining challenge of our time: Surgeon general (msn.com) AND https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/3048961/surgeon-general-rightfully-calls-social-media-warning-labels AND Surgeon General calls for warning label on social media platforms (usatoday.com) AND Surgeon General Murthy wants social media warning labels. Try telling that to Congress. (msn.com) In addition to calling for a warning label, Murthy’s op-ed in The New York Times included a wish list of provisions for social media safety legislation — an issue that has frustrated advocates and many policymakers for years. Several attempts by Congress to draft legislation have foundered against the unwavering objections of the tech industry, as well as disagreements among policymakers about how strictly tech platforms should be regulated, and whether a federal law should preempt the myriad state laws that have now advanced. Contacted by POLITICO, several members of Congress involved in tech safety issues either did not respond to Murthy’s call to enact a warning label, or offered statements supporting their own bills. Two key senators supporting kids’ online safety — Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) — jumped on Murthy’s op-ed to push their own legislation. They called for passage of their Kids Online Safety Act, to force tech platforms to prevent the spread of harmful content online, which has been introduced multiple times but never gotten a floor vote. CHILDREN LEARNING: Study shows that 'transcendent' thinking may grow teens' brains over time This kind of thinking, which the study's authors call "transcendent," moves beyond reacting to the concrete specifics of social situations also to consider the broader ethical, systems-level and personal implications at play. Engaging in this type of thinking involves analyzing situations for their deeper meaning, historical contexts, civic significance, and/or underlying ideas. In previous studies, the authors had shown that when teens and adults think about issues and situations in a transcendent way, many brain systems coordinate their activity, among them two major networks important for psychological functioning: the executive control network and the default mode network. EU: Austria's support gets EU biodiversity law over the line The law is a central part of the EU's ambitious environmental goals under its Green Deal, which aims to have the bloc become carbon-neutral by 2050, and ecological groups hailed its definitive adoption. [] The legislation requires the European Union's 27 member states to put in place measures to restore at least 20 percent of the bloc's land and seas by 2030. It focuses particularly on tracts with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. Its passage has sparked anger from some farmers' groups who warn it will threaten their livelihoods and add to what they say is excessive regulation at a time of heightened competition from importers outside the bloc. The conservative European People's Party—the main grouping in the European Parliament which emerged strengthened from EU elections just over a week ago—had echoed the farmers' complaints and called the law badly drafted. It goes against an environmentally responsible policy and the objectives set by the European Union and the signatories of the COP21 agreement in 2015 in the fight against global warming. Nor does it respect the agreement on the protection of biodiversity signed by 190 countries in 2010 in Nagoya.
5G SWITZERLAND: Power of 5G antennas revealed as political decision Adaptive antennas can now transmit at up to ten times the power of conventional antennas at peak transmission times. [] This decision is being taken politically, behind the scenes, by a working group made up of representatives of operators, federal offices, the Doctors for the Environment group, and the cantons. The crucial point in the discussions is the setting of the “K factor”. This is the figure that will allow operators to increase the power of directional antennas or not. [] As for the reasons why the communications ministry decided to take a step towards the industry, or why it decided not to follow the lead of its environment office, which is responsible for protecting the health of the population, in making this type of decision, the department sidestepped the question: “The political questions you are asking concern a management team that is no longer in place and has conducted its own reflections.” []It should be noted that the new management team, under the aegis of the new Communications Minister Albert Rösti, will soon be communicating on the implementation of a motion aimed at creating the general conditions conducive to the rapid deployment of 5G. It is therefore possible that politics will soon get things moving again. Power of 5G antennas revealed as political decision - SWI swissinfo.ch
5G: Serbia is still waiting for a modern network The 5G network in Serbia has been on hold since 2021 when Serbia Broadband (SBB) submitted a request to the competent Ministry to initiate the procedure for allocating 5G frequencies. Serbia will not get a 5G network this year, either. The rulebook on minimum conditions, which is necessary for public auction, will allegedly be adopted only at the end of the year. The auction itself is scheduled for next year, from October to December,“ SBB lawyer Milos Stojkovic said. [] Why is Serbia, along with Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the only country in Europe where the 5G network has been waiting for four years? Telekom is currently heavily in debt, it would certainly have to take out a new loan for this investment. If you look at their current operations, the level of debt, you don’t get the impression that they have any funds, said Radosavljevic. And while, according to announcements, Serbian users in Germany will be able to use the 5G network in that country, as well as in China, preparations are being made for 6G. HAVANNA SYNDROME: Intelligence bill eyes commission on Havana syndrome House lawmakers are proposing to create a commission to investigate debilitating brain-related injuries caused during incidents against U.S. government personnel posted abroad, known formally as anomalous health incidents. A section of the current House intelligence authorization bill now being debated would set up a National Security Commission on Anomalous Health Incidents. The malady is suspected of being caused by some type of directed energy first detected against U.S. diplomats in Havana and thus became known as “Havana syndrome.” U.S. intelligence agencies have insisted that the incidents were not the result of hostile action, a claim that has angered victims who are convinced they have been targets of sonic weapons or other directed energy. The American spy services concluded there is no indication that a hostile power is behind the incidents and blamed the brain injuries on unspecified environmental or personal mental problems. HEALTH: Circadian rhythm drives the release of important immune cells, study reveals The sites where our bodies come into contact with the outside world—via skin, the surface of the eye, inside the mouth, the lining of the intestine and the urinary tract, for example—are known as barrier tissues. "Building cells takes time. Instead of constantly releasing cells as they are made, we think that to maximize efficiency, the body synchronizes to a rhythm where you build up ILCPs for 12 hours while animals are active and then release them while sleeping," said Kim. This process is repeated daily and is necessary to maintain adequate levels of barrier tissue ILCs in the gut. "What this suggests is if you mess up your circadian rhythm, you decrease ILCs in the tissue, making you more vulnerable to infection and an imbalance in your microbiome," Kim said. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-06-circadian-rhythm-important-immune-cells.html
HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY: The digital revolution Eight technologies that will change health and care "... new automated drug delivery technology is under development. Researchers and companies are developing implantable devices with hundreds of tiny, sealable reservoirs that open when a small electric current, controlled by an embedded microchip, is applied. The vision is that such devices could provide a way to automatically release doses for more than 10 years from a single chip. The next stage of development will be to make these devices using new materials that are bioresorbable – that is, the material essentially dissolves once drug delivery is complete, negating the need to retrieve the device. Microchips are also driving the development of more sophisticated closed-loop systems to connect with smartphones and improve dosing." INDUSTRY INSIDE TOWERS: Conference Highlights the In-Building Wireless Public Safety ‘Imperative’ The Safer Buildings Coalition is an advocacy group and resource for everything related to solving in-building wireless “dead zones.” SBC’s scope includes a range of in-building wireless technologies: 4G/5G commercial cellular, land mobile radio, Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems, private LTE and future technologies. Jim Bugel, President, FirstNet and Public Safety AT&T, in a keynote talked about the “imperative” for public safety agencies to have access to a dedicated network with its own spectrum such as FirstNet. He said that FirstNet today has deployed 60,000-70,000 cell sites across the country. Looking ahead, Bugel said that AT&T is looking at ways that the FirstNet marco network can mate with in-building wireless systems. Bugel said FirstNet coverage will expand with another 1,000 cell sites on tribal lands, in national parks and generally unserved areas and in-building wireless coverage. A heartfelt and touching keynote was delivered by Lori Alhadeff, Co-founder and CEO of Make Our Schools Safe. Alhadeff’s daughter Alyssa died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, on Valentine’s Day 2018. Lori and her husband Ilan Alhadeff founded Make Our Schools Safe so “no other parent has to endure the pain” they live with. MOSS is advocating for states to adopt Alyssa’s Law that addresses the issue of law enforcement response time when a life-threatening emergency occurs. The law calls for the installation of silent panic alarms that are directly linked to law enforcement. A panel that followed Alhadeef’s presentation looked at solutions that could make schools safer by avoiding public safety communications failures that have been a factor in mass-casualty incidents. The panel explored state and federal legislation that could help schools ensure that critical communications are always available inside school buildings during emergencies. INDUSTRY: 911 Consolidation Outages like the latest one that hit AT&T are evidence that we’ve probably gone too far with consolidation. There is one area of network consolidation that I think is of particular concern. Carriers have very quietly rearranged the 911 network configuration in the country in a way that I think puts 911 callers in jeopardy. If I was a government 911 official, I’d make every carrier show me the route taken when a customer dials 911. I think they’ll be shocked, and maybe that can lead to putting the genie back in the bottle. Carriers will always choose consolidation and saving money over other factors. However, saving money is not as important as making sure that 911 calls get delivered when people are in trouble. 911 Consolidation | POTs and PANs (potsandpansbyccg.com)
