The fact that the launch of only 28 satellites to such a high altitude caused a major worldwide pandemic lasting for two years was a loud wake-up call to the human race to reexamine its assumptions. One of these assumptions is that there is a dose-response for RF radiation, i.e. that the greater the power level, the greater the harm. I will revisit this unfounded assumption in my next newsletter.”

HEALTH: Your smart watch isn't a medical device—but it is tracking all your health data A smartwatch is not a medical device as defined by law. In the UK, medical devices are strictly regulated in a way that other devices such as smartwatches are not. These regulations provide users with better legal protections and clarity as well as providing for resolution in the event of a mishap. Biosensors, previously thought of as devices that were administered only in clinical settings have now evolved by design into slim patches for consumer use. Take the Nix Biosensor device. When paired with Apple Watches, it is designed to measure a user's optimal hydration level in real time by identifying molecular markers in sweat and determining the loss of fluid and electrolytes (substances that maintain a balance of fluids inside and outside cells). Finally, emerging trends also indicate that more and more women are relying on fertility and cycle trackers in smartwatches and sophisticated apps. HEALTH: Researchers demonstrate control of living cells with electronics In conventional electronics, a flow of electrons through wiring and circuitry carries information, while electromagnetic waves do the work in wireless communications. "In biology, there aren't free electrons moving through your body," said Sally Wang Ph.D. '23, a postdoctoral researcher and co-lead author on this paper with Chen-Yu Chen Ph.D. '23, a fellow researcher in Bentley's lab. "So what do biological systems do to move those electrons? They transfer electrons using redox reactions." Cells make redox (or reduction-oxidation) molecules, which can transport electrons from one place to another using redox chemical reactions, causing the gain and loss of electrons in cells. This electron transfer results in changes to oxidation levels in cells and is central to important biological processes like photosynthesis and respiration. [] The engineered cells can accept electrons from electrodes as well as from cells via redox reactions, making them in effect "bilingual." "This opens doors for building completely new ways to connect information and data-rich technologies to biology," said Bentley. NATURE: Harpswell fishing advocate battles winds of change (lobster fisherman vs. offshore wind, mentions EMF) When presenting his case against offshore wind, Leeman favors the shotgun approach. He can rattle off dozens of facts and figures to support his position, and if you push back against one of his arguments, he has several more ready to go.

One of the toughest to refute is that scientists don’t actually know what will happen to the surrounding sea life if we install a wide array of massive, floating wind turbines out in the Gulf of Maine.

Leeman is basically right. The handful of countries that have floating turbines, including the United Kingdom and Norway, don’t have very many. It’s an emerging technology that researchers haven’t had time or opportunity to build a robust body of research around. There could indeed be unforeseen negative effects on sea life.

Aside from bird strikes, there are two major environmental concerns with offshore wind: the underwater acoustics generated by the turbines, and the electromagnetic fields that emanate from the cables carrying their power ashore. Either or both of those phenomena could potentially disrupt the surrounding ecosystem, and scientists don’t really know by how much. It could depend heavily on how a particular project is designed and built. 

A 2022 research brief, “Electromagnetic Field Effects on Marine Life,” by the U.S. Offshore Wind Synthesis of Environmental Effects Research program, states, “When in close proximity to subsea cables, some animals have demonstrated behavioral responses in a few studies, such as increased foraging and exploratory movements. So far, behavioral responses of individuals have not been determined to negatively affect a species’ population, but further research is needed to refine our understanding of the effects of EMFs on wildlife.” But in Leeman’s view, society should just abandon offshore wind, or build it somewhere else and do the research over there. He doesn’t acknowledge that man-made climate change is also a potentially serious problem for sea life in the Gulf of Maine, one of the fastest-warming bodies of water on the planet. [ ] That opinion stands in stark contrast to those expressed by a range of New England interests. For example, the advocacy group New England for Offshore Wind says the technology is essential for addressing the region’s future clean energy needs. “We believe that offshore wind is the single biggest lever we can pull to address the climate crisis while also strengthening our regional economy, protecting ratepayers, improving public health by reducing pollution, and creating high-quality jobs and equitable access to economic opportunity,” the group’s website says. New England for Offshore Wind has more than 50 named partners, including the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Environmental League of Massachusetts, New England Aquarium, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, Maine Audubon, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts (at Boston, Lowell and Amherst), and the Union of Concerned Scientists. SCHOOLS: VR/AR in Ohio Schools: Do You Consent? CHARDON - Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are no longer just the stuff of entertainment. These mediums are now integrating into the education sector, as evidenced by Saint Joseph Academy (Cleveland) and their 2023 press release touting the institution as “…the first high school in the world to acquire the HoloAnatomy Software Suite.” Educators tout the technology’s potential to expand teaching capabilities, but detractors warn of inherent biological harm stemming from its use. Parents and students alike, do you consent? Prof. Om Gandhi of Utah University cautions, “We have never tested microwave radiating devices directly in front of the young developing eye. The absence of proof of harm at this point does not mean that we have evidence of safety.” Samsung and Google, two of the world’s biggest telecommunications companies [and much more], are also heavily involved in VR. Devra Davis, President of Environmental Health Trust (EHT), asks, “We want to know why is Google encouraging young children to employ a technology that has never been tested for their use when Samsung has a similar system that explicitly advises that no child under the age of 13 should be using it.”
