BROADBAND OUTAGE AFRICA: Massive African Internet Outage Eight countries in West Africa reported Internet outages after damage was reported to four different undersea fiber cables. The most affected countries are Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Benin, with additional problems caused in Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Lesser impact was felt in South Africa, Senegal, and Portugal. There has been no official word on what caused the problem, but it’s likely due to the shifting of the seabed due to seismic activity. It’s going to take between five weeks and several months to fix the cables. Study finding #2: The study found that 7 out of 10 teens report feeling peaceful and/ or happy when they don't have a phone with them. 5G ECONOMICS; Americans already paid for Europe's 5G, but Europe wants more Having already subsidized the rollout of network infrastructure on the other side of the Atlantic, American companies are now being targeted by 'fair share.' It's not an obvious handout, like the Marshall Plan, but a propping up of European telecom hidden to those outside the industry. The clues are in the impact that spending cuts by giant US operators have had on Ericsson and Nokia, the Nordic vendors collectively responsible for most of Europe's 5G infrastructure. Ericsson's US revenues, for instance, fell about 22% last year, while its non-US revenues rose a tenth, thanks almost entirely to network sales in India and the licensing of intellectual property. But despite the headline sales dip of just 3%, gross profit, after the deduction of restructuring charges, dropped 8%. It's a similar story at Nokia. While the Finnish company is not explicit about US performance, it reported a 32% decline in North America sales last year and unchanged sales elsewhere. Overall revenues dropped almost 11%, but Nokia's gross profit was down more than 14%. []Transatlantic imbalance While US operators invest about the same as Europeans do in capital expenditure as a percentage of revenues, US consumers pay steeper rates for telecom services. In 2022, AT&T's capital expenditure was equal to 16% of its revenues. At France's Orange, it was a similar 17%. The difference is that a typical mobile contract customer at AT&T still spends about $50 a month. In France, one of Orange's wealthiest markets, the same type of customer spends less than €19 (US$21). HEALTH CELLTOWER: The new, but unknown, threat to our health Of notable interest is that there is a cell tower on the property of Bloomfield Hills High School – exposing students on a constant basis in exchange for revenue. While the FCC has not done any health and welfare studies on radiofrequency exposure since the mid-1990s, most other nations have – with most European and Middle Eastern countries setting safety levels and RF limits tens of times lower than in the United States.  And according to the FCC, the number will continue to grow exponentially as the 5G network will require the expansion of 800,000 new wireless cells to enable seamless service as we continue to travel with our mobile devices. There have been no scientific or health studies on the potential dangers of 5G exposure. We're not tin foil hat folk. We rely on our cell phones just as much as everyone else. But more research and study must be done on the potential dangers of radiofrequency radiation of not only cell phones, but of cell towers. The placement of cell towers must be studied, and they should not be a financial bargaining tool. Public places, whether on or atop schools, or in and around public spaces, cannot be appropriate locations for the placement of potentially toxic radiation devices. Further, the self-imposed moratorium on study and investigation by a federal agency, the Federal Communications Commission, must be lifted and scientists must be permitted to study the effects of radiofrequency emissions.  Perhaps it'll all go up in smoke. HEALTH RF LIMITS: Our digital world: The toxic radiation health threat Our digital world is ubiquitous and the telecommunications industry wants it that way. But academic, medical, public health and scientific officials who have spent their careers observing and studying the boom of the telecommunications industry warn that radiofrequency (RF) radiation waves emitted from cell towers, antennas and our wireless devices are the new tobacco in terms of a threat to public health. This is because RF is unremitting – we are constantly on our screens and government regulators have been reluctant to look at any scientific findings since they set safety levels in the mid-1990s.. The limits for allowed exposure to RF, or microwave exposure, are set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP), an organization based in Germany, and by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the USA. They are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission and are still based only on heating (thermal) effects that appear within a very short time of exposure. However, the set limits do not take into account the long-term exposure or any other harmful biological effects. Critics of both the FCC and the ICNIRP say both entities have rejected mountains of data from a growing body of evidence that a combination of RF waves coming from cell towers and antennas and devices in our homes, offices and schools are causing a range of harmful non-thermal effects that are happening well below their recommended maximum levels. In fact, safety levels and limits of RF in Europe and the Middle East are tens of times lower than in the United States. []

Joel M. Moskowitz is director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. For decades, Moskowitz has researched and long expressed concern about the potential health hazards of RF waves from wireless devices and cell towers. Perhaps one of the last of his kind, Moskowitz, who also sits on the advisory board for the nonprofit research arm, Physicians for Safe Technology, spoke to Downtown Newsmagazine over a landline. To minimize his exposure to RF, he uses hard-wired computers as much as possible, only turns on his cell phone when he needs it, and keeps it off and out of his bedroom at night. Moskowitz reviewed the history of the wireless boom and with it the U.S. government’s halt on funding studies that examine the health effects of RF waves. The passing of the 1996 Telecommunications Act prohibits federal funding, criticizing and discussion of the potentially harmful effects of RF radiation for new policy. “Wireless technology got its origins in the military and there was research being conducted due to concerns of military personnel exposure to radar waves,” Moskowitz explained. “But when the telecommunications industry realized there was money to be made bringing wireless technology to the private sector, it took the ball and ran with it. HEALTH: From autism to Alzheimer's: A large-scale animal study links brain pH changes to wide-ranging cognitive issues global collaborative research group comprising 131 researchers from 105 laboratories across seven countries has published a paper in eLife. The study identifies brain energy metabolism dysfunction leading to altered pH and lactate levels as common hallmarks in numerous animal models of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, and Alzheimer's disease. At the forefront of neuroscience research, the research group sheds light on altered energy metabolism as a key factor in various neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. While considered controversial, an elevated lactate level and the resulting decrease in pH is now also proposed as a potential primary component of these diseases. Unlike previous assumptions associating these changes with external factors like medication, the research group's previous findings suggest that they may be intrinsic to the disorders. This conclusion was drawn from five animal models of schizophrenia/developmental disorders, bipolar disorder, and autism, which are exempt from such confounding factors. Common Phenomenon Across Disorders: About 30% of the 109 types of animal models exhibited significant changes in brain pH and lactate levels, emphasizing the widespread occurrence of energy metabolism changes in the brain across various neuropsychiatric conditions.

Environmental Factors as a Cause: Models simulating depression through psychological stress, and those induced to develop diabetes or colitis, which have a high comorbidity risk for depression, showed decreased brain pH and increased lactate levels. Various acquired environmental factors could contribute to these changes.

Cognitive Impairment Link: A comprehensive analysis integrating behavioral test data revealed a predominant association between increased brain lactate levels and impaired working memory, illuminating an aspect of cognitive dysfunction.

Confirmation in Independent Cohort: These associations, particularly between higher brain lactate levels and poor working memory performance, were validated in an independent cohort of animal models, reinforcing the initial findings.

Autism Spectrum Complexity: Variable responses were noted in autism models, with some showing increased pH and decreased lactate levels, suggesting subpopulations within the autism spectrum with diverse metabolic patterns.

HEALTH: FDA renews proposed ban on electrical stimulation devices The US Food and Drug Administration is again proposing a ban on electrical stimulation devices used to reduce or stop self-injurious or aggressive behavior, the agency said in a statement Monday. Electrical stimulation devices deliver electrical shocks through electrodes attached to a person’s skin to attempt to reduce or stop harmful behaviors. The only facility currently using these devices in the US is the Judge Rotenberg Education Center in Canton, Massachusetts, where an estimated 50 people have a treatment plan that includes the potential use of such a device, according to the statement. The FDA says it has taken this rare step of banning a previously approved device because electrical stimulation devices “present an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury.” This is the second time the FDA has proposed a ban on these devices. HEALTH BRAIN PH LEVEL: Editor’s Note: There are so many studies coming across my news feed about neurology and disease rates and brain function, I want to highlight the one today about PH, lactate, and brain metabolism. Could this be one of the adverse effects of RF exposure that patients are perceiving, and is it something that can be verified?

In this paper, titled "Large-scale animal model study uncovers altered brain pH and lactate levels as a transdiagnostic endophenotype of neuropsychiatric disorders involving cognitive impairment," the mechanistic insights into the reduction in pH and the increase in lactate levels remain elusive. HEALTH DEMENTIA STUDY: Study identifies drinking, diabetes, smog as dementia risk factors Alcohol intake, smog and diabetes are the three greatest risk factors for developing dementia that people can modify, a study conducted by Oxford University researchers recently concluded. The journal Nature Communications published the study in which researchers examined 40,000 brain scans of adults between ages 44 and 82 on file at the U.K. Biobank database to examine genetic and environmental factors that lead to the development of dementia, Newsweek and The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Researchers examined 161 risk factors, including blood pressure, smoking, alcohol use, diet, and weight, and divided them among 15 categories while conducting their observational study. The researchers cautioned that the study is observational and only indicates a correlation between the risk factors identified and dementia. INDUSTRY: Researchers send data 4.5 million times faster than average broadband Aston University researchers have sent data at a speed that is 4.5 million times faster than the average home broadband. The rate is the fastest ever sent by opening up specific new wavelength bands that are not yet used in fiber optic systems. As the demand for more data increases, it is expected the newly developed technology will help keep up with future demand. The scientists used optical fibers, small tubular strands of glass that pass information using light. Regular copper cables can't carry data at such speeds. The feat was achieved by opening up new wavelength bands that are not yet used in fiber optic systems. Different wavelength bands are equivalent to different colors of light being transmitted down the optical fiber. They did this by developing new devices called optical amplifiers and optical gain equalizers to access them. Dr. Phillips led the development of a management device, or optical processor, at Aston University. INDUSTRY: Telcos Shedding Jobs I heard a chilling story recently. AT&T apparently notified a bunch of employees in Los Angeles that their jobs are being eliminated and that they need to report to other cities like Dallas or lose their job. Many of these employees were relocated to Los Angeles in the last five or six years, and the company paid for that past relocation. Employees now must move at their own expense. I was told the same thing was happening in other AT&T markets across the country. This is a particularly callous way to eliminate employees, and AT&T is clearly trying to induce employees to resign to avoid paying severance. This is not the kind of behavior that would normally be expected from a large corporation. It certainly tells the remaining employees of the company that they are not valued. There is rarely a month that doesn’t go by without hearing that one of the big telcos is laying off a group of employees somewhere. The story piqued my interest, and it took only a little research to see that telcos have steadily been eliminating staff while the biggest cable companies have not. Consider the following chart that shows employment at the biggest ISPs and carriers since 2018. SURVEILLANCE: If you watched certain YouTube videos, investigators demanded your data from Google Shared YouTube data prompts civil liberty worries. The videos were sent by undercover police to a suspected cryptocurrency launderer under the username "elonmuskwhm." In conversations with the bitcoin trader, investigators sent links to public YouTube tutorials on mapping via drones and augmented reality software, Forbes details. The videos were watched more than 30,000 times, presumably by thousands of users unrelated to the case. YouTube's parent company Google was ordered by federal investigators to quietly hand over all such viewer data for the period of Jan. 1 to Jan. 8, 2023, but Forbes couldn't confirm if Google had complied.
