I have had to reduce my time on-line so please note the links, underlined, may be either at the beginning or end of each line item. CLARIFICATION - I apologize that it wasn’t clear that there wasn’t an article about woodpeckers per se in the Oct 24 news. The Woodpecker was the name of a radar system historically used by Russia that sounds somewhat like WiFi, as Keith Cutter demonstrates clearly in his audio file in the article: Why is WiFi so Uniquely Harmful? RF exposure, pulse-modulated multipliers, 10Hz ELF brain disruption, and WiFi memory effect in body tissues (highly recommended)
I am a big fan of Canadian tech critic Paris Marx. There are a few of his recent offerings today.

NEWS AND NOTES
AI: POLAND"AI will not take jobs, but will be used to weaken workers." Interview with Paris Marx New technologies, artificial intelligence or algorithms will not take people's jobs, but will be used to weaken employees and strengthen corporations. This is a story as old as time. We invite you to Jakub Dymek's interview with Paris Marx. [] Perhaps at a favorable time for them? Since governments could promise nothing, they decided to promise everything. That's it! Thanks to this, Silicon Valley can convince us that only the progress of technology will save us. Notice: not social programs, redistribution and taxation of the wealthy. Not the big public health or infrastructure projects that in the past were necessary to ensure that the benefits of technological progress don't just go to a handful of wealthy elites. Now we are supposed to believe that a great change (from artificial intelligence, through autonomous cars, to the colonization of Mars) is just around the corner, as long as we trust Silicon Valley and not the state. Even if we see that this great change still cannot materialize! [] "Uber allegedly used artificial intelligence tools to check the identity of drivers and whether they are definitely wearing masks. In fact, the photos were viewed by people employed by one of the platforms offering micropayments for online tasks." https://panoptykon.org/ai-nie-zabierze-pracy-wywiad-paris-marx
AI: Data Vampires: Sacrificing for AI (Episode 3) Climate impacts and wider harms of generative AI. Paris Marx Sam Altman is clear: he’s ready to sacrifice anything for his AI fantasies. But are we? We dig into why generative AI has such extreme energy demands and how major tech companies are trying to rewrite climate accounting rules to cover how much their emissions are rising. AI isn’t just churning out visual slop; it’s also being used to transform how our society works and further reduce people’s power over their lives. It’s a disaster any way you look at it. This is episode 3 of Data Vampires, a special four-part series from Tech Won’t Save Us. 30 MINUTES https://techwontsave.us/episode/245_data_vampires_sacrificing_for_ai_episode_3

As anyone who lives in an area with a lot of pickup trucks and SUVs can tell you, light bars aren't uncommon accessories, even though it's illegal to use them on the streets in most states. Some states even require that they're covered up while they're not being used. Naturally, many a red-blooded truck driver chooses to ignore these rules. BIG TECH/AR/GLASSES: IEEE Meta’s New AR Glasses Come at a High Cost Orion forgoes affordability for innovation In the last decade, Meta has embarked on a quest to blend the physical and virtual realms. The tech giant is bringing that fusion to fruition with the recent unveiling of what it calls its first pair of “true” augmented reality (AR) glasses, named Orion. While the company notes that Orion is a product prototype, its future iteration could be available to consumers. But Meta has to first bring down Orion’s manufacturing costs—reportedly at US $10,000 per pair—to make it possible for people to actually purchase the AR glasses. Orion’s hardware consists of three parts: the actual glasses, a wristband for gesture control, and a wireless puck for low-latency computing. Embedded into the wristband are electromyography sensors that capture and process electric signals generated by hand and wrist muscle movements. The pocket-sized puck’s dual processors carry part of the computing load, including some artificial intelligence (AI), graphics rendering, and machine perception, which is a device’s ability to interpret sensory information from the surrounding environment. But the glasses themselves are the star, with a host of built-in technologies that allow them to shine—and drive up the price. Custom chips running on Meta’s AR glasses consume less power than conventional chips and are optimized for AI, graphics, and machine perception algorithms. The frames are crafted from magnesium, a lightweight material that efficiently dissipates heat. Miniature cameras and sensors surround the frame’s rims, aiding in eye and hand tracking and mooring digital objects in the real world. MicroLED projectors beam holographic displays right through the transparent lenses. Why Are Orion Glasses so Expensive? Another significant drawback of SiC is price. “Silicon carbide is more expensive to produce compared to traditional optical materials [and] is more difficult to manufacture due to its limited yield and specialized manufacturing requirements,” says Volkov. It’s a major contributor to Orion’s prohibitive expense. The company is currently working on a version with better display quality, sharper visuals, and other optimizations to make the technology more affordable. Affordability plays a key role in the widespread adoption of AR technology. Meta is already on the right track with a compact and lightweight design, but it needs to work alongside other AR hardware developers to formulate “more efficient manufacturing processes for silicon carbide, explore alternative materials, and invest into research for cost-effective materials,” Volkov says. “Gradual feature introductions and public education about AR benefits will also help increase accessibility and appeal to a broader audience.” https://spectrum.ieee.org/meta-ar-glasses-expense

BROADBAND INDUSTRY: Ignoring economics is a killer for broadband programs Broadband policy has “largely ignored” economics, said Technology Policy Institute’s Scott Wallsten, resulting in a “persistent” digital divide.
BROADBAND INDUSTRY: The Barrier to Closing the Digital Divide In a finding that will surprise nobody, Pew Charitable Trust analyzed all of state plans related to the Digital Equity Act (DEA). This is the grant program that is aimed at tackling barriers to broadband adoption, such as getting computers into homes, providing training on how to use technology and the Internet, and increasing broadband adoption rates. Pew found that every state and territory says that the primary barrier to closing the digital divide is affordability. [] States are now scrambling to find alternative ways to improve broadband in communities with low broadband penetration. The Pew article outlines a few such efforts being tried in communities:
Expand free WiFi at community anchor institutions to provide more places for the public to connect to the Internet.
Bring free broadband to public housing.
Bring free WiFi to parks and other commonly used outdoor locations.
Establish tech hubs where people can not only get free WiFi but can use public computers and get trained on how to use computers and broadband.
Lending programs to get Internet-connected devices to the public.
Establish telemedicine hubs.
Fund WiFi infrastructure for newly constructed low-income housing.
These are all great ideas, but they are all not nearly as beneficial as getting broadband directly into every home. POTS AND PANS PEW STUDY
CELLPHONES: Did my phone just break up with ME? What happens when the author of How to Break Up With Your Phone loses her phone [] I cannot verify my identity. Sure, I can “click on all the squares that have bicycles on them,” but if there are sites that require me to enter a verification code that they send by text (one of these sites is Verizon, which is annoyingly ironic, given my circumstances), then I cannot access them. God forbid I have to change any passwords. [] I am being forced to make plans and stick with them. This morning, I was supposed to accompany a friend to drop off her family’s recently deceased guinea pig to be cremated (long story).² Normally, we would have texted back and forth ahead of time (“Still up for meeting outside Giant?” “Running 2 min late!” “Be right there!” etc, etc, etc). But this morning, we just had to make a plan and . . . show up. We succeeded — turns out that two adult women can, in fact, meet each other at 8:40am on a Friday without texting about it 15 times first — but it was interesting to notice how foreign the experience felt. CELLPHONES The World Foundation for Natural Science: Mobile phone radiation: It is harmful after all! South Korean researchers — who analyzed 24 studies and published their report on Oct. 10 in Environmental Health — found significantly higher risks for malignant brain tumors, meningioma and glioma on the side of the head where cellphones were held." [] The editors also write, “Poverty, specifically, is known to heavily influence the distribution of self-harm in all communities.” Child poverty declined 2010-2022 in the U.S., so how could it explain an increase in self-harm?

HEALTH INDUSTRY: New Wearable Devices Target the Brain to Bring Better Sleep For the last decade, neuroscientists have studied the modulation of brain waves in patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or other neurological or mental-health conditions to improve sleep, memory and cognition. “The scientific community believes that brain stimulation can indeed modulate the sleeping brain,” said Roneil Gopal Malkani, an associate professor of neurology specializing in sleep at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago. But Malkani cautions that using sound as a medical treatment is still being researched. In one sleep study aimed at improving memory, Malkani gives patients pairs of associated words, such as “car” and “engine.” Those who receive targeted bursts of sound delivered through headphones during the deepest phase of sleep have better memory the next day when they are given one word and asked to recall the second. https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/new-wearable-devices-target-the-brain-to-bring-better-sleep/ar-AA1sSO12

LEGAL CENTER FOR HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: Environmental Impact vs. Financial Gains CHEJ has learned over the years that neglecting environmental responsibilities can lead to significant long-term repercussions. However, the polluting corporations’ goals are centered on Profit. CHEJ’s goal is to continue to inform and educate all consumers about environmental issues that will likely favor businesses over environmental ethics. A case currently being considered by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is Seven County Infrastructure Coalition v. Eagle County, Colorado. It is scheduled for argument during the 2024-2025 term. This case concerns whether agencies are required to assess environmental impacts beyond the scope of their regulatory authority. Why it matters: This case could have the potential to clarify the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act in relation to agency requirements to study environmental impacts outside the scope of their regulatory authority.
