New paper; Spots with Extremely High Radiofrequency Radiation After Deployment of 5G Base Stations in Stockholm, Sweden Authors:  Hardell L, Koppel T.c1. Abstract During recent years there is an on-going deployment of 5G base stations for radiofrequency [RF] communication in Sweden as well in many other countries. This is made without investigations on risks to human health and the environment. Since 2016 we have made several measurements of environmental exposure to RF radiation in Stockholm, Sweden, including previous generations and now also 5G. In the current study, performed in October 2023, the broadband meter Narda-550 with the probe EF-1891 was used. It gives results in the root mean square [RMS] mode, thus not peak levels. Both the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection [ICNIRP] and the US Federal Communications Commission [FCC] base their guidelines on RMS levels of RF radiation. Measurements were made in similar city areas as in our previous studies. Results show that the RF radiation has increased substantially. High maximum levels were found at e.g. the Central Railway Station [3 637 191 μW/m2], and popular walking streets such as Mäster Samuelsgatan [11 613 976 μW/m2], and Drottninggatan [5 271 555 μW/m2]. The peak values would be much higher. These levels are in the same magnitude or even higher than those measured in homes of persons that rapidly developed symptoms of the microwave syndrome after installation of 5G, usually in combination with 4G+, in the neighborhood. They are also substantially higher than levels that have previously been linked to cancer and the microwave syndrome in studies of people living near base stations and masts from previous generations of telecommunications. AI: AI is 'accelerating the climate crisis,' expert warns If you care about the environment, think twice about using AI. A recent study indicates that producing a high-definition image using artificial intelligence consumes as much energy as fully recharging the battery of your cell phone. Generative artificial intelligence uses 30 times more energy than a traditional search engine, warns researcher Sasha Luccioni, on a mission to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the hot new technology. Recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world of AI by the American magazine Time in 2024, the Canadian computer scientist of Russian origin has sought for several years to quantify the emissions of programs like ChatGPT or Midjourney."I find it particularly disappointing that generative AI is used to search the Internet," laments the researcher, who spoke with AFP on the sidelines of the ALL IN artificial intelligence conference, in Montreal. The language models on which the programs are based require enormous computing capacities to train on billions of data points, necessitating powerful servers.  Then there's the energy used to respond to each individual user's requests. Instead of simply extracting information, "like a search engine would do to find the capital of a country, for example," AI programs "generate new information," making the whole thing "much more energy-intensive," she explains. AI; BLOOD IN THE MACHNE BRAIN MERCHANT: AI is revitalizing the fossil fuels industry, and big tech has nothing to say for itself Silicon Valley is helping to accelerate the climate crisis in at least 3 major ways Last week, tech reporter Karen Hao dropped a big, thoroughly reported story about how Microsoft is trying to have it both ways when it comes to climate. The software giant has positioned itself as a leader in sustainability, championing its green initiatives and publicizing the ways its AI technology might be used to reduce carbon emissions—all while selling AI tools to oil and gas companies to help them accelerate fossil fuel extraction. [] As if to emphasize just how uncomplicated this matter is, Bloomberg ran a story the very next business day headlined, “AI Boom Is Driving a Surprise Resurgence of US Gas-Fired Power.” [] Got that? We were, according to this report, on track for fossil fuel use to top out—until AI came along. AI is a notoriously large energy suck—an AI-generated answer needs about 10 times as much electricity as a Google search. Now analysts and agencies are quietly revising their decarbonization goals downward, gas and coal plants that were slated for retirement are being kept online, and now utilities are building more gas plants in the first half of 2024 than were built in all of 2020 combined. []It’s also worth noting that data centers are at the moment a relatively small slice of total worldwide energy usage—currently something like 1%, dwarfed by cars, heavy industry, commercial buildings, and so on. That could change—a report from the Electric Power Research Institute projected that the electricity required by AI companies could rise to reach up to 9% of the United States’ energy mix, which would, quite frankly, be insane. (If you think the web is overrun with AI content now, imagine a world where one tenth of all the electricity we generate is going into pumping out more of the stuff.) [] BUT. There’s another element at work here, and that, as energy analysts have pointed out, is that utilities have a self-interested reason to take AI companies’ energy projections at face value, or even to inflate them: It means they can raise rates and lobby to build more gas plants! And that means there might be two separate bubbles getting inflated here: A bubble in investment in generative AI in the tech sector, *and* a bubble in the investment in fossil fuel plants justified by generative AI. Credible sourcing is the best detection tool Since Stable Diffusion's debut in 2022, we've often discussed the concerns surrounding deepfakes, including their potential to erode social trust, degrade the quality of online information by introducing noise, fuel online harassment, and possibly distort the historical record. We've delved deep (see what I did there) into many aspects of generative AI, and to date, reliable AI synthesis detection remains an unsolved issue, with watermarking technology frequently considered unreliable and metadata-tagging efforts not yet broadly adopted. Although AI detection tools exist, we strongly advise against using them because they are currently not based on scientifically proven concepts and can produce false positives or negatives. Instead, manually looking for telltale signs of logical inconsistencies in text or visual flaws in an image, as identified by reliable experts, can be more effective. ARS TECHNICA

BIG TECH: Big Tech is emitting way, way more greenhouse gas emissions than reported Big Tech's data hunger is even worse for the environment than its main players let on, according to a new investigation by the Guardian. The all-out push for AI (and the necessary processing energy it demands) is only exacerbating the demand. The new report analyzed real (or location-based) emissions from Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple's company-owned data centers, finding that their total reported emissions are likely more than 7 times (or 662 percent) higher than current reports. The disparity, according to the Guardian, can be attributed to what experts call "creative accounting" of emissions via renewable energy certificates (Recs). Purchased Recs allow companies to offset some of its electricity consumption to renewable energy-generated electricity (basically "cancelling out" its emissions). But these renewable energy sources are often not actually consumed by the company's perpetrating facilities or even those nearby. MASHABLE ON MSN

FCC SPACEX: SpaceX to FCC: Loosen Rules or Cellular Starlink Tech Risks Becoming Text-Only SpaceX is warning that its cellular Starlink system won't be able to provide real-time calling to consumers unless the FCC loosens rules on satellite radio emissions.  "This out-of-band emission restriction will be most detrimental for real-time communications such as voice and video, rendering such communications unreliable both in critical and in common circumstances, increasing risk in emergency situations,” SpaceX told the FCC on Friday. [] Although SpaceX’s technology promises to help users receive a signal in cellular dead zones, a key question is whether the Starlink satellites risk generating radio interference. Both AT&T and Verizon contend the technology will do so if the FCC grants SpaceX a waiver to exceed the radio emission limits.  In response, SpaceX has been urging the US regulator to grant the waiver, saying it’s necessary to ensure the cellular Starlink tech can offer robust coverage. At the same time, the company has slammed AT&T and Verizon as “wannabe competitors” resorting to obstructionist tactics.  On Friday, SpaceX went into more details after the FCC submitted a list of questions about the interference concerns. The company’s 11-page letter once again asserts that the cellular Starlink satellites won’t cause radio interference while operating above the normal radio emissions.  MSN

HEALTH: 'Play-putty' that reads the body's electric signals could open a new field of flexible biometric sensors The conductive squishy circuits—whether homemade or store-bought—are made of flour, water, salt, cream of tartar and vegetable oil. "Salt is what makes it conductive," Kireev explains. As a child's toy, this modeling clay is a malleable way to add lights to an art project by connecting them to a power source as a way to teach kids about circuits. Now, Kireev and his team have demonstrated that the material has more potential. "We used the squishy circuits as an interface to measure electricity or measure bioelectrical potentials from a human body," he says. They found that, compared to commercially available gel electrodes, these squishy circuits effectively captured various electrophysiology measurements: electroencephalogram (EEG) for brain activity, electrocardiogram (ECG) for heart recordings, electrooculogram (EOG) for tracking eye movement and electromyography (EMG) for muscle contraction. [] "The lower the impedance between the electrode and the tissue, the better the conductivity in between and the better your ability to measure those bioelectrical potentials." The study found that the impedance for the squishy circuit electrode was on par with one of the commercially available gel electrodes and twice as better as a second comparison electrode. Kireev highlights several benefits to this material. First is cost: Even using pre-made putty, the cost per electrode was about 1 cent. Typical electrodes cost on average between $0.25 and $1. HUMAN RIGHTS: Accusations and actions: A decade tracking tech company responses to human rights allegations The rapid evolution of technology – and its deep interconnection with all aspects of our lives – indisputably creates new opportunities, increases efficiency, and provides opportunities to maximise human potential. But this pace of development comes with significant human rights risks, with particular impact on some of the most vulnerable in society, including women, minorities and children, that tech companies must identify and mitigate. Despite booming profits and this growing influence, however, social media, software, surveillance, telecommunications, and other tech-related companies are behind in demonstrating full commitment to transparency and a proactive willingness to address the wide range of harms and human rights abuses associated with their products and services. A decade of company outreach and analysis by the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (the Resource Centre) highlights that better practices by the sector are possible: robust human rights due diligence, in particular, provides a key pathway to arresting this trend of abuse by this critical sector. INDUSTRY POTS AND PANS: Are Light Poles Telecom Infrastructure? A long-running issue resurfaced recently asking if light poles should be made available for telecommunications. This idea that light poles might be telecom infrastructure comes from language included in Section 224 of the FCC’s code that says that a “utility shall provide a cable television system or any telecommunications carrier with nondiscriminatory access to any pole, duct, conduit, or right-of-way owned or controlled by it.” The question was raised again recently when AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and the CTIA, the lobbying group for the cellular industry, asked the FCC to consider the issue. These companies are interested in using light poles to mount electronics and radios to support cellular service and FWA home broadband. [] The renewed interest in getting onto light poles is an indicator that the companies are exploring the idea of returning to the small-cell model for FWA wireless. Verizon launched a trial of this technology in parts of Sacramento and a few other cities a few years ago but is now concentrating on serving FWA from big cellular tower sites. Verizon also recently announced a successful trial of connecting people with FWA in downtown high rises from radios placed on top of nearby buildings. The request for placing radios on light poles makes a lot of sense in this context. Urban utility poles are notoriously already overloaded with wires and often don’t have room to add a radio system. Pole owners don’t like having electronics on poles since it adds to the complexity and creates safety issues for technicians that work on poles, particularly after bad weather events when repairs have to be made. Light poles would be virgin real estate for wireless carriers since they know they would be the only one on the poles. []There are several issues with mounting radios on light poles. In many communities where other utilities are buried, light poles are often designed as an esthetic enhancement and are not traditional wooden poles. Cities with aesthetically pleasing light poles are going to strongly resist hanging electronics. These cities probably already forced other utilities underground to enhance the livability of neighborhoods. Light poles were often also not designed to bear the extra weight and wind stress that might come from mounting additional structures on the poles. It will be interesting to see if the FCC takes up the issue. They have considered it before and never opted to bring light poles under their jurisdiction. I have to imagine there would be a court battle if the agency ordered it. POTS AND PANS

INSPIRATION MAX WILBERT: Alternative Cultures Are Beautiful and Important. They're Also Not Enough. "The conscious destruction of a competing ethic” and the need for organizing and direct action []While we’re going about the beautiful and important work of building alternative ways of life, the ruling class is going about their business. The US military is running special operations and drone campaigns throughout the world. The CIA is clandestinely toppling governments and the FBI is undermining movements for change. The World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund are waging economic warfare against poor countries. Mass media corporations are brainwashing hundreds of millions of people with advertising and sophisticated public relations campaigns. Carbon emissions and human population are rising. And the planet is spiraling deeper into crisis. [ I believe we must move from building alternative cultures to building oppositional cultures. Permaculture movements, Transition Towns, ecovillages, and community land trusts can and must be cultures of resistance. They can be places where militant direct action against the industrial system is discussed and celebrated — where an offensive movement that actively dismantles the global industrial economy is born. They can be schools where movements learn tactics and organizing skills, and study history and security. They can be refuges, underground railroads, places where resisters go for food, material support, and safety. In this context, their value as alternatives is far greater. As the combination of ecological breakdown and resistance makes the industrial food system and energy grid unreliable, we will all need alternative ways of living. This work is far more difficult than simply building community, gardens, and ecological buildings, but far more consequential.[] The world we’re heading for now is lifeless. David Brower, founder of Earth Island Institute, Friends of the Earth, and former director of the Sierra Club, once said “All I have done in my career is to slow the rate at which things get worse.” This can’t go on. LEGAL: The End of the Chevron Doctrine Is Bad for Business Two recent Supreme Court decisions produced sweeping changes to how regulation works in the United States, shifting power from agencies to the courts. Investment will now take place against the backdrop of the “judicial veto,” where a wide range of potential litigants and sympathetic judges will decide which regulations actually go into effect, and when. According to conventional wisdom, scaling back the regulatory state will help businesses. However, the court’s rulings will suppress business investment in three unintended ways. The judicial veto doctrine 1) multiplies the number of decision-makers and discounts the value of expertise, 2) increases the timeframe of unpredictability, and 3) tips the scales in favor of incumbent businesses and their shareholders over new entrants and early-stage investors. NATURE: Study finds marine animals in untouched habitats are at greater risk from human impacts than previously thought [] In a new study, researchers estimated the impact of human activities on more than 21,000 marine animal species worldwide, taking into account their exposure and vulnerability to stressors, including fishing, shipping, and land-based threats. They then mapped the impacts across the global ocean, identifying locations where climate-driven impacts overlap with other human-caused stressors. PHYSICS.ORG

SMART METERS HEALTH: “Smart” meters trigger… menopause "I’ll always be grateful for Dr. Elizabeth Plourde’s work on EMFs. I recall vividly how some parts of her 2016 book (1) blew me away… and made me aware of how many people might be suffering from EMF-related symptoms. In her book, she recounts several patient case studies where women suffered from what looked like symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, insomnia, headaches, decreased libido, etc. – the classic hallmarks of hormonal disruption. When Dr. Plourde asked her “menopausal” patients if anything had changed at home around the time when they started experiencing these symptoms… She figured out that in many cases, the symptoms started the moment that a so-called EMF-emitting “smart” meter was installed near their homes.
When the smart meters were remediated (by opting out of the smart meter program and going back to an analog one, or by shielding it properly) – these women “mysteriously” saw their “menopausal symptoms” vanish. []To this day, it’s still very unclear what percentage of all people blame their so-called menopausal symptoms on old age, when in reality their environment is what is making them hormonally disrupted. He will briefly discuss a meta-analysis of case-control studies of cell phone use and tumor risk, as well as the state of the evidence on tumor risk and other health hazards. He will also address the World Health Organization's recent efforts to assure the public that wireless radiation exposure is safe by commissioning biased reviews. Wireless technologies, including cell phones, wireless internet, and Bluetooth devices, have become ubiquitous in our lives. Most adults in the US own a cell phone, and cell phone use is widespread among children and adolescents. New cell antenna sites are being deployed widely. Wireless technologies and equipment designs also change rapidly. The preponderance of scientific evidence shows adverse biological and health effects from the radiofrequency (RF) radiation, or electromagnetic fields (EMFs), used and generated by these devices. A number of studies have considered the mechanisms of biological harm from RF radiation, and federal studies have documented increased incidence of certain tumors in laboratory animals associated with RF exposure. Epidemiological studies have found increased risk of certain tumors associated with long-term use of wireless phones.  Joel M. Moskowitz, PhD is the Director of the Center for Family and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Moskowitz has conducted research on disease prevention programs and policies for more than 40 years, most recently focusing on adverse health effects of cell phone and wireless radiation. In 2009 he served as the senior author on a hallmark paper reviewing research on mobile phone use and increased brain tumor risk that was updated in 2020. He has disseminated research related to wireless technology, public health, and policy since 2009. He is a member of the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) and an advisor to the International EMF Scientist Appeal signed by more than 250 scientists who published peer-reviewed research on EMF and biology or health.
