I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that for a cybertruck to be on the road in the Czech Republic, the lights have to be modified, and rubber gaskets have to be installed on the infamous metal edges, - while the US keeps allowing these insane unsafe ‘innovations’ on the roads.

Cece Doucette Wanted: 10 Local Champions for Safe Tech in Schools! The Ask We are looking for diplomatic citizens in ten towns to join us in a pilot project, and we already have five. Folks are encouraged to join us from across the U.S., Canada and abroad. It's Go Time! For ten years we have worked on legislation with state-level authorities across the nation to protect our kids from wireless radiation in schools.
We passed a law in New Hampshire and the legislature spent a year investigating wireless harms. They issued a groundbreaking report and recommend transitioning away from wi-fi in schools (and home) in favor of far superior hard-wired connections.
Every time we try to pass a subsequent law to enact New Hampshire's recommendations, however, industry intercepts and defeats the bills.
So, we cannot wait for higher authorities to fix this. Our children and educators are in harm's way right now. It's up to parents, guardians, grandparents and other citizens to protect our collective children until public policy catches up to the science. Let's see what we can do! This isn't rocket science to fix, but it does require a mindset shift from the all-wi-fi-all-the-time messaging to safe, responsible technology use.We have an excellent window now to start this conversation with our schools as many are already removing cell phones from the classroom this year. First let's educate ourselves and other parents on the risks so we can empower our schools.
Then together let's work with our schools to store cell phones safely -- no child or teacher should sit next to a rack full of radiating cell phones. Then let's begin discussions to also mitigate the radiation from the wireless access points, tablets, laptops, smartboards, etc. -- there are simple no-cost steps every school can take today to begin reducing the exposures. AI BRIAN MERCHANT BLOOD IN THE MACHINE: Yes, the striking dockworkers were Luddites. And they won. The ILA was derided for asking for higher wages and resisting automation. Days later, they took home a 60% raise. On the heels of the screenwriters' victory wrt AI, take note: Luddism can win.
AI GARY MARCUS Two Nobel Prizes for AI, and Two Paths Forward As you have surely read by now, not one but two Nobel Prizes went to AI this week. Physics went to John Hopfield and Geoff Hinton; Chemistry went half to David Baker (for developing novel proteins) and half to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for their work on AlphaFold. To my mind, these two decisions are quite different. Bear with me as I walk through some concerns about the first prize; I am quite enthusiastic about the second, and promise there is an important, positive message to the field therein at the end. [] its most visible manifestation, LLMs, has brought fame and money, but no robust solution to solving any particular problem with great reliability. It remains opaque, hobbled with hallucinations and bone-headed errors, and greedy to the extreme in its need for electricity, water, and data. It’s time for a new approach, and Hassabis sees that. His open-mindedness will serve the field well. GARY MARCUS
AI: Wimbledon will evict line judges from its tennis matches after 147 years—and turn to AI instead The move is part of an upgrade of an existing tool, the Hawk-Eye challenge system, that the tennis championship has used for nearly two decades. Typically, about 300 line judges are involved in the tournament, standing with eyes transfixed on the court to decide if a ball is “in” or “out.” [] AI has made inroads in sports in more ways than one. Paris Olympics this year saw the technology being applied in various ways, including sifting through game clips and creating “digital twins” of match venues to facilitate planning. AI has also become an important part of spotting and training talent across sports like football and rugby. MSN
AI: Wikipedia Declares War on AI Slop The editors are fighting back. As 404 Media reports, a team of Wikipedia editors has assembled to create "WikiProject AI Cleanup," which describes itself as "a collaboration to combat the increasing problem of unsourced, poorly-written AI-generated content on Wikipedia." The group is clear that they don't wish to ban responsible AI use outright, but instead seek to eradicate instances of badly-sourced, hallucination-filled, or otherwise unhelpful AI content that erodes the overall quality of the web's decades-old information repository. AMAZON: Amazon targets faster deliveries and buying with new tech The technology, which Amazon is calling Vision Assisted Package Retrieval, works by shining a green light on packages so that the deliverer does not have to waste precious seconds reading labels. Amazon said it would equip 1,000 active delivery trucks with the tech early next year. Then new system calls to mind a technology widely deployed in Amazon’s warehouses that shines a light on items on robotically wheeled shelves so workers can pick them and put them in bins. That system replaced one that had some workers walking up to 10 miles a day pushing carts through narrow aisles to find stowed items. [] Amazon also said it is planning to add smaller warehouses attached to its Whole Foods grocery stores so that customers do not have to shop at competing grocery stores for items not offered there. That way, shoppers could order a bottle of Pepsi while shopping at a Whole Foods, which doesn’t carry the soft drink, and have that brought to them when they check out. []At an event held at a warehouse near Nashville, Tennessee, Amazon also said it is using new artificial intelligence software that can reduce the need to spend minutes or hours researching new products, such as televisions and dog food. The online guides will include more extensive information, as well as recommendations, so that customers can make more informed decisions more quickly, the Seattle company said. The new feature follows one announced earlier this year putting an AI search into the main Amazon website. Called Rufus, it gives users longer answers to search queries. MSN

AUTOMOBILES: Even With Rubber Edges, Critics Want Tesla’s Cybertruck Off Europe’s Roads One of the first Tesla Cybertruck imported from the US to Europe has been approved for road use in the Czech Republic. However, safety groups aren’t convinced. Despite the required modifications, they sent a letter to the local government expressing serious concerns about the electric truck’s shape, weight, and size. Apparently, they believe that having a vehicle shaped like a giant, unyielding wedge might not be the safest choice on the roads. [] To gain approval as a privately imported vehicle, the Cybertruck’s infamous sharp edges were reluctantly dressed with rubber moldings, an attempt to make it slightly less dangerous for pedestrians—though one wonders if anyone actually feels safer. Additionally, the LED headlights and taillights were tweaked with yellow indicators to align with European regulations. [] Campaigners argue that even at this seemingly deflated weight, the truck fails to meet regulations for the N1 category when fully loaded. European laws require heavy vehicles to be fitted with speed limiters, a rule that seems to have been overlooked in this case. The letter doesn’t stop there. It highlights the truck’s enormous footprint, expansive blind spots, lack of crumple zones, and extreme acceleration, all of which they say pose a real danger to pedestrians and other road users. For these reasons, campaigners argue that the Tesla Cybertrucks currently on European roads should be de-registered and removed from public streets. Among the signatories of the letter are the European Transport Safety Council, Eurocities, Clean Cities, Transport & Environment, POLIS – Cities and Regions for Transport Innovation, International Federation of Pedestrians, and the European Cyclists’ Federation. []As The Guardian reports, the Czech Transport Ministry didn’t find the weight discrepancy to be much of an issue, dismissing it with the explanation that the registration was merely an “individual approval of a vehicle” within national boundaries. In other words, it’s not the EU’s problem—yet. Meanwhile, the European Commission is a little less relaxed about it and has asked for “more information on national requirements and safety measures” to evaluate the registration. Looks like the Cybertruck isn’t in the clear just yet. [] Europe may be waking up to the reality of sharing its roads with vehicles more suited for wide-open plains than cobbled city squares. []Many of these people seemed to be Ford F-150 Lightning owners who took advantage of the truck's vehicle-to-home charging feature as a means of keeping the lights on. Vehicle-to-home charging, or V2H, uses bidirectional charging to feed an EV battery's power back into your house. For some EV owners, the two-way power option has already been a boon, as workers can use power tools in remote locations. But as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, often causing our power grid to falter, emergency uses are becoming more common. COOL DOWN (we know where this is headed)
CELLPHONES: Yes, it sounds like a conspiracy theory. But maybe our phones really are listening to us Big brands already know far too much about us. But Cox Media Group’s ‘Active Listening’ software adds a whole new layer of creepiness. But just because brands don’t need to listen to your conversations, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t companies figuring out creepy new ways to mine your data. 404 Media, a tech-focused news site, recently got hold of a pitch deck from Cox Media Group (CMG), touting its “Active Listening” software, which targets adverts based on what people say near their device microphones. The presentation doesn’t specify whether this voice data comes from smart TVs, smart speakers, or smartphones but the slide where it extols “the power of voice (and our devices’ microphones)” has a picture of people looking at their phones. CELLPHONES SCHOOLS UK: Screens and teens: How phones broke children’s brains In February, new battle lines were drawn in this ongoing war. Government ministers confirmed plans to ban them in schools in England, with the Department for Education (DfE) issuing guidance to help teachers with implementation. Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, said the DfE believed the guidance would “empower” headteachers to exorcise these digital demons, and “would send a clear message about consistency”. []St Albans in Hertfordshire has gone one substantial step further, announcing in May its intention to become the first British city to go smartphone-free for under 14s. Parents received a joint letter from the primary schools consortium encouraging them to delay buying the devices for their children. Meanwhile, the Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC) movement’s online pledge to withhold smartphones from children until they are at least 14 has attracted signatures from 37,000 parents nationwide, representing more than 56,000 children, while a quarter of British schools (8,100) have signed the pact.[] The reason this is so pressing isn’t simply that tweens and teens aren’t paying proper attention in class. It has a far more sinister impact on children and young people’s mental health, according to the book, The Anxious Generation, written by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. He presents the compelling argument that the uptick in time spent online has coincided with an alarming mental health crisis all over the world []“The companies had done little or no research on the mental health effects of their products on children and adolescents, and they shared no data with researchers studying the health effects. When faced with growing evidence that their products were harming young people, they mostly engaged in denial, obfuscation, and public relations campaigns,” he says. [] These companies have rewired childhood and changed human development on an almost unimaginable scale It makes for terrifying reading.[]There are four foundational “harms” triggered by the new “phone-based childhood”, puts forth Haidt: social deprivation, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation and addiction. []Haidt also highlights technological solutions, such as the introduction of better “basic” phones to avoid giving children smartphones; lockable pouches for phones; and quick and easy age verification methods. Finally, governments need to step in. Laws such as requiring all social media companies to verify the ages of new users, and policies demanding schools enforce a “phones in lockers” rule during the school day, could have a big impact. The main thing to stress is that it’s not too late to make a change, says Haidt: “When new consumer products are found to be dangerous, especially for children, we recall them and keep them off the market until the manufacturer corrects the design. In 2010, teens, parents, schools and even tech companies didn’t know that smartphones and social media had so many harmful effects. Now we do.” THE INDEPENDENT ON MSN

EMISSIONS, CORPORATIONS: We Reported on Nike’s Extensive Use of Private Jets. The Company Just Made It Harder to Track Them. Since our story, the company has added its planes to a popular Federal Aviation Administration program that makes it harder to see where they’re going. []We reported that Nike’s private jets last year emitted almost 20% more carbon dioxide than they did in 2015, which the company uses as a baseline for its climate goals. The planes are one small reason Nike and its supply chain produced roughly as much carbon dioxide in 2023 as in 2015, despite the company’s voluntary commitment to sharply reduce emissions. ENERGY CLIMATE UK: Net Zero ‘revolving door’ leaves taxpayers out in the cold Capturing Carbon in a £22 billion blackhole A few weeks ago, the Chancellor warned us of the £22 billion black hole allegedly left in the country’s finances by the Conservatives. On Thursday, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced that same colossal amount was to be invested by the Government in one of its biggest single financial commitments towards the Net Zero target: carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Out of that £22 billion, £8 billion is reportedly “expected to come from the private sector”, leaving the rest to be shouldered by taxpayers, either through the Treasury or in the form of government subsidies to specific developers. Among the critics of the programme are environmentalists and economists, as well as the National Audit Office, with the commercial viability and the efficacy of the “unproven” CCS technology in delivering Net Zero targets - despite the enormous financial demand placed on taxpayers - being questioned. 5G HEALTH: Einar Flydal 5G: Are there biological effects at all? There are still people who stubbornly claim that 5G and other wireless systems cannot have any biological effects "because the radiation is too weak". But they are becoming fewer and fewer as more and more people understand that it is not only the strength that matters, but quite different properties of the radio waves. The claim of "no proven effect" no longer has credibility. Under the pseudonym "Aslan", a Norwegian researcher published an overview of research in 2021 showing that it is simply a serious mistake to believe that 5G does not harm health and biological systems, i.e. all life, in general. “Another distinctive feature of electromagnetic radiation is its potential to affect insulin production in the body, which has direct consequences for blood sugar levels and poses a risk of diabetes. Jolley et al. (1983) found a significant reduction in insulin release in rabbits exposed to 5ms-pulsed 4 kHz electromagnetic radiation compared to controls. Later, Sakurai and Satake (2004) similarly found a 30% attenuation in insulin production in the same rabbit breed when exposed to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields at 60 Hz. In recent times, Topesakal et al. (2017) have observed that electromagnetic exposure at 2.45 GHz (the WiFi frequency) damaged the pancreas of rats and caused a decrease in insulin production and corresponding hyperglycemia (abnormally high levels of blood sugar levels). These latest findings were confirmed by Massoumi et al. (2018). In addition, Meo and Rubeaan (2013) found that the insulin molecule itself is altered by EM radiation so that it is no longer recognized by the processes that need it, which is related to insulin resistance (see also Li and Dai (2005)). Together, these animal studies show that electromagnetic radiation negatively affects insulin production at a number of different frequencies. An increased risk of diabetes has also been seen in epidemiological studies with humans (Havas 2008, 2009). Since most cellular processes are controlled by the movement of charge around the cell, these results are not surprising, as discussed in detail by Yakymenko et al. (2016). HEALTH: Space Effects Astronauts are strangely susceptible to kidney stones while in space. Researchers analyzed data from astronauts during their missions and of rodents on Earth and found that people in space experience a combined effect of microgravity and radiation that messes with the organs. What they found: Microgravity shifts the distribution of fluids in the body, and kidney tubules tend to shrink. These tiny tubes ferry filtered blood from the kidneys back to blood vessels. Shrunken tubules hinder kidney filtration of calcium and salts, and those minerals accumulate into stones. In space, astronauts are subjected to a stream of high-energy particles that originate from the sun and other stars (and are usually deflected away from the surface of Earth by the planet's magnetic field). Exposure to such radiation shuts down mitochondria in astronaut’s cells and leads to inflammation and damage of the kidney tubules. What the experts say: If we’re going to eventually go to Mars or pursue longer-duration space missions, more research is urgently needed into how to strengthen spacecraft shields meant to scatter incoming radiation, says Evagelia Laiakis, a radiotherapy researcher at Georgetown University. - SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN (link not offered, search on line to read?)

HEALTH CELLPHONES: New study: Seventh systematic review finds significant link between long-term heavy cell phone use and brain tumor risk Relationship between radiofrequency-electromagnetic radiation from cellular phones and brain tumor: meta-analyses using various proxies for RF-EMR exposure-outcome assessment JOEL MOSKOWITZ Note: Today the journal Environmental Health published a systematic review and meta-analytic study on cell phone use and brain tumor risk by Moon et al. (2024). The study found significantly elevated risks for three types of brain tumors when examining tumors on the side of the head where cell phones were held and for heavy, long-term cell phone use. Six other systematic reviews and meta-analyses of case-control studies published in peer-reviewed journals since 2016 have also also found significant associations between heavy, long-term cellphone use and brain tumor risk (Wang & Guo, 2016; Bortkiewicz et al., 2017; Carlberg & Hardell, 2017; Prasad et al., 2017, Yang et al., 2017; Choi et al., 2020). These seven peer-reviewed meta-analytic studies contradict the conclusion of the recent WHO systematic review conducted by Karipidis et al. (2024) that there is no evidence cell phone use causes brain cancer. To learn about serious problems with the WHO systematic reviews on the health effects of radiofrequency radiation see:

POLITICS National Health Freedom Action: Big Wireless Wants Congress to Fast-Track More Wireless Radiation in More Places to the Detriment of our Health Big Tech is pushing federal bills to increase unsafe wireless technology instead of promoting wired broadband, which is not only faster and cheaper, but also safer and more secure. The additional wireless infrastructure will subject our earth to greatly increased levels of radio frequency radiation which has a toxic impact on the health of humans and other living things. Should Congress support a technology that is well known to have adverse health and environmental effects when safer, better technology exists? Wireless Radiation By wireless radiation we mean here the electromagnetic radiation from cell antennas and 5G poles that is increasingly ever present. We mean the man-made sources of mainly microwave radiation that is far greater now than humans have been exposed to on this planet in the past. The intensity of microwave radiation we are exposed to now is greater than the intensity levels in our grandparents’ days by 10 to the 18th power! That number describes the enormous difference between the intensity level of the current day versus what we had in the past. This unnatural radiation is unlike sunlight and other natural radiation that we have lived in harmony with for eons. That growth is allowed and fostered by government exposure guidelines that protect the wireless industry rather than the well-being of Americans. Safety Guidelines? In 1996 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) offered guidelines for microwave intensity that supposedly would protect our health. These guidelines only addressed thermal effects, the effects that occurred at levels that heated a body. Guidelines with thermal effects alone were not in line with the scientific knowledge at the time, as it was already well known especially through military studies that this radiation can have enormous biological effects even without raising a person’s body temperature. These effects include neurological damage, blood disorders, vascular disorders, metabolic disorders, sperm damage, and more. The FCC is in charge of setting standards for radiation and health. It has refused to update these regulations since 1996, despite the increase in the number and type of exposure to wireless radiation we have today. The FCC was sued by public interest groups and a 2021 court ruling stated that they ignored extensive scientific evidence brought forward showing harm and that they failed to provide a reason that their current guidelines adequately protect us from the harm of microwave radiation. The FCC to date has not responded to the court’s ruling. Wired Broadband and Bridging the Digital Divide Too often, government policies have favored wireless technology over the safer wired technology. The government should not favor one industry over the other, unless one of the industries is safer for the public. Fiber optics technology uses laser light to communicate, and the light stays within the fiber and so it does not cause health and environmental issues the way that wireless technology does. It is widely available and more reliable. It furthers the goal of bridging the “digital divide,” as it can more cheaply bring internet to all who need it. It does not need expensive “upgrades” every few years, as does the wireless option. It uses less energy and is not a burden on the electrical grid. Many current federal bills that increase risk to humans have already passed in the House and are now in the Senate, alone or in other larger bills. Our government has favored the more harmful technology long enough. Our Senators should know that it is time to favor the safe, wired option, especially if we want to “bridge the digital divide.” National Health Freedom Action

SMART CITIES: A hit show on Toronto’s failed smart city project returns to the stage The award-winning play, “The Master Plan,” dramatizes the city’s fractured relationship with then-Google subsidiary Sidewalk Labs.
What happens when one of the most controversial and visible unrealized smart-city developments becomes a piece of theater? “The Master Plan” dramatizes Toronto’s fractured relationship with then-Google subsidiary Sidewalk Labs and its effort to implement smart city infrastructure in one city neighborhood. The play sold out its first Toronto run in 2023 and earned playwright Michael Healey a Dora Award (Canada’s equivalent of a Tony Award) for Outstanding New Play. The show is returning to Toronto in November at Soulpepper Theatre in the East End’s Distillery District. Based on the Josh O’Kane book “Sideways: The City Google Couldn’t Buy,” the show captures the conflict between two main players: Waterfront Toronto, the government agency in charge of developing the city’s lakeshore, was seeking to bring forward-thinking ideas to a 12-acre parcel of land in a populous city that rarely took risks with urban tech investments. Sidewalk Labs won the bid, but it wanted more data and less bureaucracy than Waterfront Toronto would provide. Privacy and surveillance concerns affected public perception of the effort and relationships between the two parties during negotiations.
The project faced some dramatic turns of events: An adviser on the project resigned, Ontario fired Waterfront Toronto board members, and an outspoken critic of the project, former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie, said Sidewalk’s parent company Alphabet would be the project’s only beneficiary. Ultimately, Sidewalk Labs scuttled the Toronto waterfront project in May 2020, attributing its demise to “unprecedented economic uncertainty” in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Finding drama in the smart city Toronto’s residents were divided over the smart city project falling through. Critics expressed relief, while advocates for the project were disappointed by the city’s risk-averse attitude. That central conflict is at the heart of the book, the author said in an interview. “I wanted to write about the massive power of Silicon Valley and the slow, sluggish pace of the Canadian government, and how the clash between those two [parties], who really wanted the same thing, resulted in them still not fundamentally understanding each other,” O’Kane said. “I didn’t think it would make great theater, but it does.” Healey threaded his stage play with O’Kane’s narrative of how the Sidewalk Labs partnership with Toronto began smoothly but quickly soured. “Josh’s book is so vivid, and the way he described those meetings between Google tech bros and the incredibly conservative Canadian bureaucrats made me think from the outset there were dynamics here to exploit for humor,” Healey said in an interview. https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/toronto-smart-city-sidewalk-labs-master-plan-play/728717/
